Weatherburn, Smith - b. 1784). - [However, Robert’s name is not included in the 1821 Freemen’s Roll, so presumably he died in 1820/21.]

1754

William Weatherbourn m. Elizabeth Ossleton on 14/10/1754 at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne. [This may be the marriage of the William Wedderburn, miner of Heaton, whose wedding at All Saints, Newcastle, “was attended by no less than 5000 persons, most of them from the country and mounted on pillions”.  [Is William the ‘s. of Ralph’, bap. at Saint John’s in 1729 - or the ‘s. of Thomas’, bap. at Saint John’s in 1730?]

1754

A Marriage Bond was sworn on 24/1/1754 for the marriage of Jacob Weatherburn, 28 [probably Jacob Wetherburne, b. 1722, e.s. of Thomas W. & Isab. Hasley (‘Horsly’), m. 1720], Butcher of Westgate, Newcastle, & Ann Barton, 24, of St. John, Newcastle, which is likely to have taken place shortly after, although it has not yet been found. - Jacob Weatherburn, Butcher of Westgate, was also the Bondsman at the Allegation of Thomas Dunning and Margery Horsley on 18/11/1761 and was one of the witnesses to their marriage the following day at St. John, Newcastle. Jacob & Ann apparently had 4 daughters & 3 sons: Mary (1754); William (1757); Joseph (1758); Ann (1761); Elizabeth (1764); Thomas (1768) & Sarah (1771).]

1754

1755

John Wedderburn [unidentified (?b. Aberdeenshire)] m. Ann Hodgson [by licence - not traced] on 27/4/1755 at Whittington. [One of his granddaughters told ‘A.W.’ that her grandparents came from Aberdeen. The baptisms of 2 daughters & 6 sons have been found: Jane (ante-nuptial, b. 1755, who m. i) James Postletwaite in 1777 & ii) John Bleasdale in 1781); William (b. 1758, who m. Ann Gorrel in 1795); Ann (b. 1760, ?m. 1787); John (b. 1763, ‘who went to Africa as a missionary’); George (b. 1765 - ‘who went to India’); Adam (b. 1768, ‘who died from a fall from a horse’ - he m. Mary Baxter in 1795); Christopher (b. 1772, who m. Ann Quail in 1795 & emigrated to S. Africa in 1820 and  changed the spelling of his surname to ‘Wedderburn’); & James (b. 1774). - (The two eldest children were bap. as ‘Wetherburns’ but the others were bap. as ‘Weatherburns’. - According to a “History of the Family in S. Africa” (written by Christopher’s great-grandson George Richard W., 1866-1948), John & Ann’s 2nd s. was Alexander ‘who became a sugar-planter in Jamaica’. (He was presumably b. 1761-62 & it seems likely that he is the Alexander ‘Widderburn’ who had a son Richard bap. at Manchester in 1805, q.v., & maybe a d. Amelia, who m. Edmund Chorlton at Manchester in 1830, q.v.) - [In the W.B., ‘A.W.’ writes that Christopher Wedderburn’s grandson William (b. 1830), and his great-grandson George Richard, “differ as to the name of Christopher’s father, William saying that it was John and George that it was William Ann (née Hodgson) died in Dec. 1789 at ‘Lindale’, Lancs., & was buried at Dalton (in Furness) on 2/1/1790.  John ‘from Dalton in Furness’ died at Low Greaves, Pennington (in Furness), in Aug. 1795. 1755

Margaret Weatherburn died on 9/5/1755, aged 72, and was buried at St. Michael, Alnwick (Alnwick Parish Church), on 11/5/1755. [It seems likely that Margaret is the ‘Margrate’ Pearson who m. ‘Jon Watherburn’ at Eglingham on 27/12/1705 (q.v.). - (See death of John Weatherburn at Alnwick in 1757.)]

1755

[Another Jane, ‘wife of James Weatherburn’, was buried at Holy Trinity on 24/10/1796, who must be Jean Hay, m. 1744, as she is metioned in the Will of her brother-in-law John W. (b. 1717), which was written in 1762.]

1755

Alice Weatherburn [bap. 1730, ‘d . of John W.’] m. John Davison on 1/11/1755 at Whickam.  [Banns also read at Tanfield.

(Gentleman’s Magazine, Jan. 1756.) - [John is probably John Weatherburn, b. 1679 (afterwards ‘of Greenfield’), d. 1757, younger s. of John W. ‘of Greansfield’, d. 1712, & Grace Alder (m. 1676) - the ‘Jon Watherburn’ (sic) who m. Margrate Pearson at Eglingham on 27/12/1705 (q.v.). - Their son John (b. 1707) would be John Weatherburn ‘the younger’.]

In the account of  “The Wedderburns of Allerdean, Horncliff, and Newcastle, 1744-1896” ‘A.W.’ writes: “James Wedderburn, afterwards of Longridge, b. about 1745-50, was the younger s. of  --- Wedderburn probably of Allerdean, Northumber-land, a carrier between Berwick & Edinburgh”.  (This baptism would seem to be that of ‘the carrier’s’ son James, but if Henry Weatherburn who m. Anne Tindal at Belford in 1742 (q.v.) is ‘the carrier’, as seems likely, he had 3 sons, not 2 - the others being Thomas (bap. 1742 - who was buried at Norham on 2/1/1831, aged 88) & Henry (bap. 1745 - who was buried at Norham on 21/5/1833, aged 88), so James was the youngest, not ‘younger’, son.] - “James went to Longridge and was for some years in charge of the toll-bar, where he died 1825-35.  His great-nephew, William Wedderburn ‘of Horncliffe’ (b. 1850), says that James was buried at Norham and speaks of a tombstone there to him and his wife, but gives no inscription.  Several Newcastle families descend from him”. - James Wetherburn (sic) m. Christen Philip in 1784 (q.v.). - [They had 3 sons & 2 daughters: Margaret (b. 1785); Agnes (b. 1788); Henry (b. 1789); Andrew (b. 1791); & James (b. & d. 1793).] - Christian Weatherburn ‘of Thornton’ [between Longridge & Norham] was buried at Norham, Northumberland, on 4/1/1826, aged 77, & James Weatherburn ‘of Longridge’ was buried there on 14/11/1833, aged 78.

Sarah Martin at Sunderland in 1792 (q.v.) & may be the John ‘Wedderburn or Hunter’ whose father, John Wedderburn, was “living 1810, in which year he was granted Admon. of the estate of John Wedderburn or Hunter, late boatswain’s mate of H.M.S. Penelope, his lawful son’. ]

There is an account on W.B. pp. 510-11 of “Christopher Wedderburn and his descendants in South Africa” which is somewhat inaccurate.  The author, ‘A.W.’, says that Christopher, ‘who was in business in Deansgate, Manchester’, emigrated to S. Africa in 1820 with his wife and five children, and that Christopher’s grandson William (b. 1830) and his great-grandson George Richard (b. 1866) gave different versions of Christopher’s parentage but indicated that the family left Scotland after, and because of a connection with, the ’45: “William speaks of his great-grandfather being a farmer, or landed proprietor, perhaps of some importance”. William said that Christopher was the youngest child of a family of 8 sons & a daughter. (2 daughters & 7 sons - including a James b. after Christopher - have been identified. - See m. 1755)  - Christopher is said to have m. Ann Quail ‘about 1799’ but Christopher Weatherburn m. Ann Quail at Manchester in 1795 (q.v.). - Their 8 children were all baptised as ‘Weatherburn’ at St. James’s Church, Manchester. In a “History of the Wedderburn family in South Africa”, written by Christopher’s g. grandson George Richard  (b. 1866), it indicates that before he emigrated to S. Africa Christopher was a Tailor at 70 Liverpool Street, Manchester:  Christopher & Ann Wedderburn, & their 5 [surviving] children, went to S. Africa in the settlers’ ship “Stentor” in 1820. At first they lived at “Green Fountain” but in 1837 Christopher bought a farm near Salem on which he built a house he named “Lindale” after his birthplace. It was here that Christopher died on 18/7/1848, and was buried in Salem Cemetery. - Ann died on 14/7/1856 and was buried beside her husband. (‘Notes on the Wedderburn Family’.) - There are certain discrepancies between the various accounts. (See ‘Chriswed.doc’ for fuller details.) -  Many of Christopher & Ann’s descendants are living in S. Africa and others in England. (One of the latter believes that Christopher’s father was a ‘Scrymgeour-Wedderburn’.)

John Weatherburn [b. 1761, s. of James W., Bottlemaker (?b. 1735 - d. 1805) & Elizabeth Green  m. 1757 at Jarrow)] m. Elizabeth Wheldon [probably bap. 16/5/1762 at Stamfordham, nr. Dalton, Northumberland] at Jarrow on 16/4/1785. John, a Glass Maker, & Elizabeth apparently had 3 or 4 daughters & 7 sons, all b. at South Shields: Ann (b. & d. 1786); Elizabeth (b. 1787); John (b. 1789, ?m. Jane Wright in 1820); (?)William (d. 1791); James (b. 1792, d. 1794); ? Isabel (1793); James (b. 1794, d. 1820); Robert (1796,?m. Eleanor Copeland in 1823); (?another) William (b. 1799, ?m. Jane Smith in 1823); Thomas (b. 1800, d. 1819), & another Ann (b. 1805). - Of these children, only 3, William (b. 1799), Thomas (b. 1800) & Ann (b. 1805) are positively identified in the baptismal records, but as both James (b. 1794) & Thomas (b. 1800) are described, at the time of their deaths, as ‘s. of Mr. Weatherburn of Mill Dam’, they must be brothers. - Robert (b. 1796) must also be a son of this John & Elizabeth. ) - [Either Elizabeth or Isabel could be a daughter but Isabel is more likely to be a daughter of John Weatherburn & his wife Elizabeth Robson (m. not found). They are probably John W., Boatman, aged 76, & his wife Elizabeth, aged 73 (both ‘b. in the county’) who, in the 1841 Census, were  living at West Holborn, South Shields. They had a (3rd) daughter Jane bap. at St. Hilda, S. Shields, in 1796 and a (2nd) son John, b. 1799, bap. there in 1812, but their other children have not been positively identified.] - When James Weatherburn, father of John (b. 1761), died in 1805 he left a Will in which John is mentioned. - John’s wife Elizabeth [née Wheldon] may be the Elizabeth Weatherburn ‘aged 69’ who died at Bottle Hill, South Shields on 12/11/1836 (q.v.).

Robert Clark at Norham in 1818 (q.v.).]

1786

Alice Weatherburn, [2nd] d. of William W. [Customs Officer, b. c1752] & Margaret [?Nesbit - m. not found], bap. 26/3/1786 at Holy Trinity Church, Berwick upon Tweed.  Alice m. George Steel at St. James, Clerkenwell, Middlx., on 9/11/1824.  They had a daughter Margaret Steel (bap. 14/5/1826 at Wells Street Scotch Church, St. Marylebone, London). - In the 1841 Census, George Steel, a Wood Pattern Maker ‘aged 50’, & Alice ‘aged 50’ (neither ‘b. in the county’), were living with Margaret ‘aged 15’ (‘b. in the county’), at St. John’s Square, Clerkenwell, Middlx. - In the 1851 Census, Margaret Steel was a Governess at 12 Drummond Street, Edinburgh. - Margaret Steel m. Lachlan Carmichael at St. Cuthbert’s Edinburgh, on 20/6/1851. In the 1861 Census, Margaret Carmichael, ‘aged 28’ (‘b. London’), was living with her husband Lauchlan, a Pharmaceutic Chemist, aged 34, & their son James George Carmichael, aged 8 (both ‘b. Edinburgh’), at 9 Calton St., South Leith, Edinburgh. - They must have emigrated to Australia some time after 1861 as the Will of Alice’s brother William (b.1797, d.1870) includes a bequest to his niece Margaret Steel, wife of Lachland Carmichael, Chemist in Queensland, Australia.

1786

Ann Weatherburn, [e.] d. of John W. [Glass Maker, b. 1761] & Elizabeth [Wheldon (m. 1785 at Jarrow)], was bap. on 4/6/1786 at St Hilda, South Shields. She died a few weeks later and was buried on 19/6/1786 at St Hilda.  [Another daughter was given the same name in 1805 (q.v.).]

1787

Thomas Wedderburn, [?e.] s. of Thomas W. (‘who is said to have lived in Ayr’) & Jane Gavelston [‘d. of Mary Gavelston, heiress of an estate nr. Berwick-on-Tweed’] was b. c1787 at Norham, Northumberland. - In “The Wedderburns in Glasgow & later in Edinburgh” (W.B. pp. 495-96), ‘A.W.’ suggests that Thomas (senior) “may be a descendant of a Thomas W. who m. Jean Ker at Glasgow and had a son William bap. on 26/6/1735 at Glasgow, and probably other issue”.  Thomas is said to have had two brothers, one of whom, David, was killed out hunting, while the other (William?) is reported to have settled at Montrose or Arbroath. [See m. of Thomas & Jean Ker on 7/2/1734] - Thomas (junior), ‘of Berwick & Edinburgh’, became a Coachman. - ‘A.W.’ states: “Thomas m. Jane Cockburn, daughter of David Cockburn of Berwick-on-Tweed, by his wife Dorothy ---, and died in Glasgow where he is buried in the Southern Necropolis”. (Dates of m. & death not given & the information about Thomas’s death is incorrect, as it appears to be their son Thomas who died and was buried in Scotland.) - Thomas Wedderburn ‘of Berwick & Edinburgh’ is believed to have m. Jane Cockburn at Lamberton Toll c1806 (q.v.).  They had 6 sons & 3 daughters: Thomas (b. c1807); David (b. 1809); Peter (b. 1811); twins Andrew (b. 1815) & John (d. 1816); Frances (‘Fanny’, bap. 1817); another John (b. 1821); & Jane (b. 1827) - all except the eldest son were bap. in Northumberland but some of the details given on W.B. pp. 495-496 (supplied by a son-in-law of one of Thomas & Jane’s daughters) are misleading. [See details under Thomas’s m. to Jane in 1806.] - Jane Weatherburn, ‘wife of a labourer’, died at 102 Graeme St., Glasgow, on 23/8/1860, aged 83. - Andrew Wedderburn, son, was present. Jane was buried in the Southern Necropolis, Glasgow. Thomas Weatherburn died at Seghill, Northumberland, on 24/4/1861, aged 74. - John Richardson was in attendance. Thomas Weatherburn was a witness at the m. of a George Cockburn to Mary Carr at St. Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne, on 31/7/1768. He was also a witness at the m. of a William Carr to Catherine Cooper there on 28/4/1772. (The surname ‘Ker’ is often spelt ‘Carr’ in Northumberland - and ‘Wedderburn’ as ‘Weatherburn’. - It seems possible that this Thomas is Thomas’s father, and that the Thomas who m. Jean Ker in 1734  was his grandfather.)]

1787

Matthew Wedderburn, [e.] s. of Matthew Weatherburn [‘Widerbourn’, bap. 1744] & Mary Tone [m. 1773], bap. 1/1/1787 at Ponteland.  Lancelot ‘Weatherburn or Wedderburn’ (b. 1817, q.v.) “could give no account of his uncle Matthew” - but he would seem to be the Matthew Weatherburn who m. Christiana --- [m. not found]. - [They had a son & 4 daus. bap. in Yorkshire: Margaret (bap. 1813 at Thornton-le-Street,  d. 1824); James (bap. 1814 at North Otterington); Christiana (bap. there 1816, ?m. 1843 at Northallerton); Henrietta (bap. 1817 at Sowerby by Thirsk); & Barbara  (bap. 1820 at Thirsk).] - Matthew, his wife Christiana, & their e.d. all died in 1824 (q.v.).

H.T. Liddell. Thomas died on 16/12/1831 and was buried on 19/12. – He left a Will, written on 8/12/1831 & proved on 23/6/1832. - He bequeathed “the whole and every residue of my property real and personal that I now possess to my wife Mary”, the sole Executrix.

Mr Grieve died suddenly and unexpectedly in London, some time before 1795, and all his improvements are the property of a West Indian  whose name I have forgot”.)]

(W.B. - In footnote²  A.W. pointed out that on p. 502 there is the Henry Allison Wedderburn - s. of Andrew W. & Ann Allison, b. 1860 - and he suggests that Lancelot’s grandfather, Matthew Wedderburn, ‘may have married again after his wife Mary Tone’s death in 1791’. Jane Sadler in 1825 (q.v.). - [They had (at least) 5 daughters & 2 sons.] - Luke Weatherburn died at Newcastle in the Sept. qtr. of 1841.  [His widow Jane Weatherburn m. ii) Robert King at Gateshead in the Dec. qtr. of 1843 (q.v.).]

1795

Adam Wedderburn [bap. 1768 as Weatherburn at Dalton, Lancs., (?)3rd s. of John W. & Ann Hodgson (m. 1755)] m. Mary Baxter on 8/2/1795 at Manchester Cathedral.   [Adam, a Coachman in Manchester, is a brother of Christopher Weatherburn (bap. 1772), who emigrated to S. Africa in 1820 as Christopher Wedderburn, with his wife & 5 children, although their relationship is not made clear in the W.B., where it says only that Christopher’s brother Adam ‘died from a fall from a horse’.] - In the W.B., it shows that Adam had 2 sons & 2 daughters, but he had more than that.  His e.s., John Wedderburn (b. c1795, q.v.), was living in Manchester in 1833 and in that year he wrote a letter to his cousin William Wedderburn in S. Africa (William Weatherburn, bap. 1800 in Manchester), in which John says that ‘his eldest sister Mary Ann has died’. [These 2 children are not shown in the W.B.] - Adam had 5 children bap. in ‘Manchester Cathedral’ (it was the collegiate church in 1795 and only received cathedral rank in 1848, on the erection of the see of Manchester) but John & Mary Ann are not amongst them. - The baptisms found are those of Elizabeth (1802); Harriet (1805 - who cannot be the Harriet ‘who m. George Kershaw in 1859 & had two sons’, as is indicated in the W.B.); Jane (1807); Richard Coxter W. (1809 - ‘Coxter’ may be a mis-transcription of ‘Baxter’); & Adam (1810). – Their daughter Matilda’s baptism does not appear but she is said in the W.B. to be Adam’s younger daughter ‘b. 1817/18’. (Matilda m. William Warren in 1838, q.v.). - Harriet ‘born 1820’ (who was living with Ann Wedderburn in 1841) is shown as the elder daughter. (Her baptism cannot be found but it was she who m. George Kershaw in 1859, q.v.).] - In the W.B. it is stated that Adam’s son John ‘m. Mary Walthur and died s.p. at Altrincham Cheshire, aged 46, on 24 Aug. 1814’, but he died in 1841. In W.B. it is stated that “Adam Wedderburn, a Coachman in Manchester, died c1825 and is buried in St. John’s churchyard, Deansgate, Manchester. His wife Ann died there in 1847, aged 70”. However, the records show that Adam Weatherburn was buried at St. John’s, Deansgate, on 3/8/1824, aged 57 (which makes it clear that Adam is the son of John W. & Ann Hodgson who was bap. in 1768). - In the 1841 Census, Ann Wedderburn, ‘aged 65’ (‘not b. in the county’), was living at 23 Dumville St., Manchester, Lancs., with Harriet ‘aged 20’ (‘b. in the county’). - Ann Wedderburn died at that address on 23/3/1847, aged 76. [It seems likely that ‘Mary’ Baxter was ‘Mary Ann’and was later known as Ann’.] Mrs. Warren, Adam’s daughter Matilda, told ‘A.W.’ that her grandparents came from Aberdeen.

1795

John Wedderburn, [elder] s. of Adam Weatherburn [Coachman, bap. 1768 at Dalton, Lancs.] & Mary Baxter [m. 1795], was b. c1795. - John, a Tailor in Manchester, wrote a letter in Nov. 1833 to his cousin William (b. 1800, elder surv. s. of Christopher W., b. 1772, & Ann Quail), who was living in S. Africa. - John said that his eldest sister Mary Ann ‘is dead’ and that his sister Betsy (Elizabeth, bap. 1802) ‘has 3 children’. His sister Jane ‘is now lying in of her 4th’ & brother Adam (b. 1810) ‘is single yet’. [Adam m. Ann Scott in 1835 (q.v.).] - John refers to the ‘Admiral Collingwood, a house he now keeps’. - He m. Mary Walthur (m. not found). - [They had no children.] - In the 1841 Census, John Wedderburn, an Inn Keeper ‘aged 45’, was living with Mary Ann, ‘aged 50’ at Market Place, Altringham, Bowden, Cheshire. - In the 1841 Trade Directory, John is listed as ‘Victualler, Admiral Collingwood, & Tailor 10 Fleet Street, Deansgate’.] - John died at Altrincham, Cheshire on 24/8/1841, aged 46. - Mary Ann Wedderburn, ‘widow of John W., Tailor, of Manchester’, died at Chorlton (a few miles SW of Manchester) on 13/8/1849, aged 60.

1795

William Wedderburn [bap. 1758 as ‘Wetherburn’ at Dalton, Lancs, e.s. of John W. & Ann Hodgson (m. 1755)] m. Ann [‘Nancy’] Gorrel on 6/4/1795 at Pennington in Furness.   (Witnesses were John Bleasdale - 2nd husband of Jane Postlethwaite, née Wetherburn - William’s elder sister (bap. 1755) - & Robert Gorrel. William, a Mariner, is the eldest brother of Christopher Wedderburn (bap. 1772) who emigrated to South Africa in 1820 , with his wife & 5 children, as Christopher Wedderburn but this is not indicated on W.B. p. 505. - There it says only that William & Ann’s - i.e. ‘Nancy’s’ - e.s. William (bap. 3/12/1797, q.v.) “is no doubt the William Wedderburn who became a mariner and moved to West Derby near Liverpool”. - William & ‘Nancy’ had 2 daughters & 3 sons: Ann (bap. 1795); William (bap.1798, q.v.); Robert (bap. 1801, q.v.); Jane (bap. 1802, d. 1806) & Christopher (bap. 1805, q.v.). - William died ‘before 1833’. [See letter written by his nephew John that year] - ‘Nancy’ died at Whittington, Lancs. on 10/2/1840, aged 78. [It was her son Christopher (b. 1805) who was ‘present at the death’, not his uncle, Christopher (b. 1772), as ‘A.W.’ Suggests]

1795

Jane Weatherbourn [unidentified] was buried at St. Cuthbert, Billingham, Durham, on 14/4/1795. [See m. of Thomas Weatherburn (unidentified) & Margaret Swalwell at Billingham on 1/4/1771.]

1795

Christopher Wedderburn [bap. 1772 as ‘Weatherburn’ at Dalton, Lancs., (?)6th s. of John W. & Ann Hodgson (m. 1755)] is a brother of William & Adam Wedderburn in the two preceding entries. - Christopher Weatherburn m. Ann Quail on 6/7/1795 at Manchester Cathedral.  [A family-tree produced in S. Africa in 1866 shows that Christopher m. Ann Quail on 25/8/1799 at Liverpool, but the original entry in the register shows that Christopher Weatherburn m. Ann Quail at Manchester in 1795.] -  Christopher, a Tailor in Manchester, & Ann had 8 children bap. at St. James, Manchester: Christopher (1798, d. young); William (1800);  Ann (1802); Jane (1804, d. young); Ellen (1807, d. young); George (1809); Elizabeth (1811) & Esther (1814).] - In 1820, Christopher emigrated to S. Africa in the Settlers’ ship “Stentor”, with his wife & 5 surviving children (their surname bt then spelt ‘Wedderburn’) & became a cattle farmer. - Christopher died at Lindale (‘named after his birthplace’), near Salem, South Africa, on 18 July 1848, and was buried in Salem Cemetery. - Ann died on 14/7/1856 and was buried beside her husband. On W.B. p. 510, ‘A.W.’ says that Christopher’s grandson, William (b. 1830), and his great-grandson, George Richard (b. 1866), gave different versions of Christopher’s parentage. “George said that Christopher’s father’s name was William but William said that it was John”. (Later on, he states that William said that Christopher’s father and grandfather were named Adam or Alexander ‘but he didn’t know which was which’.)  “William further said that Christopher married a lady of the name of Gray or Grey and indicated that the family left Scotland after, and because of a connection with, the ’45.  William spoke of his great-grandfather having been a farmer or landed proprietor perhaps of some importance”. [See David Webster’s Will re the Hon. Barbara Gray!] - According to William, his grandfather Christopher was the youngest child of a family of 8 sons & a daughter & among Christopher’s several brothers were George ‘who went to India’, John and William ‘who went to America’, another, ‘whose name he could not give, who went to Australia’, and yet another, Adam, ‘who died from a fall from a horse’. (See Adam W. bap. 1768, m. 1795.) - In a “History of the Wedderburn Family in South Africa” (written by George Richard, who died in 1948), there was another brother, Alexander, who ‘became a sugar-planter in Jamaica’. (See Alexander Wedderburn, 1762) - William added that Christopher had a nephew, John, ‘who was living in Manchester in 1833’. (See John b. c1795 & his letter.) - There are discrepancies between the various accounts. - Many of Christopher & Ann’s descendants are living in S. Africa and others in England. (One of the latter believes that Christopher’s father was a ‘Scrymgeour-Wedderburn’.)

1795

John Weatherburn [‘Wedderburn’ (m. 1755)] ‘of Low Greaves, parish of Pennington’, was buried on 31/8/1795 at Dalton, Lancs.  John’s wife Ann  (née Hodgson) had died at ‘Lindale’, Lancs., in 1790. - John no doubt then moved to Low Greaves, where his son William, a mariner (b. 1758), lived with his wife ‘Nancy’. [John & Ann had a number of children b. at Lindale & bap. at St. Mary’s, Dalton, as ‘Weatherburns’ - including William (1758), Adam (1768) & Christopher (1772). See 3 marriage entries in 1795.]
