Margrate Pearson on 27/12/1705 at Eglingham [5m NW of Alnwick].  The following children, bap. at Alnwick, are probably theirs: John Weatherburne (b. 1707 - who must be the ‘s. of John Weatherburn of Greenfield, Co. Northumberland, Gentleman’, who was indentured as Apprentice to George Burnett of Berwick upon Tweed, Burgess, Merchant, at Berwick on 11/10/1723 for £5, & who may be the John W. buried at B-on-Tweed on 18/12/1791); Jacob Weatherburn (b. 1709 - who m. Anne Horseley at Alnwick in 1737, had a son John , ‘s. of Jacob W. of Hawkhill’, b. 1738, & was buried at Alnwick in 1739); Thomas Weatherburn (b. 1712 - who is probably the Thomas W. ‘of St. Giles Fields’  apprenticed in 1725, and who m. Northumberland, named in various Scottish records’ [who is not John Wedderburn, b. 1717 in Dundee, as suggested by A.W.]. - He is named in a submission and decreet arbital between him and Alexander Christie, merchant in Falkirk on 24 March 1741 and again in a bill protested by him v. James Dundas of Edinburgh on 11 Aug. in the same year. - [The Estate Records of the Earles Grey & Lords Howick show that on 1/8/1742 John Weatherburn of Greensfield, parish of Alnwick, signed a lease with Henry Grey of Howick on a farm at Hawkhill alias Hawkswell. The Scottish records show that John Wedderburn was described as of Greenfield when he obtained a decree v James Dundas on 4 Nov. 1745 ...[and] on 24 Aug. 1747 he granted a factory to John Watson, W.S., to manage his affairs in Scotland. In this document he is described as ‘late of Greenfield, now of Hankey’  He would also seem to be the John Weatherburn, elder, Malster, ‘of Hawkwell, otherwise Hawkhill’ who was declared bankrupt in January 1756’. (Whitehall Evening Post, 10/1/1756) - John Weatherburn, the elder, was the same John Wedderburn, merchant, shown in 1747 as late of Greenfield, now of Hankey, and also the John Wedderburn whose son, ‘John Wedderburn of Greenfield, younger’, pursued John Keith through the English & Scottish Courts 1752-1761 in connection with a disputed debt owed to his father John, dating back to1737. The death of Margaret Weatherburn on 9/5/1755, aged 72, is commemorated inside St. Michael’s Church, Alnwick, Northumberland, where she was buried. - John Weatherburn, who died on 10/5/1757 aged 79, is also buried there.  A newspaper article, published in 1873refers to John’s gravestone: “The family of Weatherburn is of old date. At one time they owned a considerable amount of property about this town. Descendants of the same family resided for many years at Snab Leazes in the adjoining parish of Longhoughton. The Plough Inn public house in Bondgate Street, with the quaint inscription above the doorway, is still kept by a descendant of them.”

Northumberland, Gentleman’, was indentured as Apprentice to George Burnett of Berwick upon Tweed, Burgess, Merchant, at Berwick on 11/10/1723, for £5. “He is one of the John W’s shown in the Berwick Freemen’s Rolls of the 1700s but it must be him first identified by trade in the 1774 Roll as John W., senr, Clerk. In a later Roll he is shown with the number 98, equating to a seniority date of 1731/2.” John would seem to be the ‘John Wedderburn of Greenfield, younger, who was the Pursuer in a case brought against John Keith, Merchant in Eyemouth, on 23 Jan. 1760, relating to a disputed debt owed to John’s father John, dating back to1737.  (See entry for ‘Jon Watherburn’s’ m. to Margrate Pearson in 1705.) - It is perhaps this John Weatherburn who was buried at Berwick on Tweed on 18/12/1791.

He was living in Castlegate, a suburb of B-on-T situated without the walls, near the north west part of the town, which consists of one broad street running nearly north, being the outlet to the great north road; and a long range of houses stretching from the further end of Castlegate eastwards, called ‘Greenses’, principally inhabited by fishermen & labourers”. ] - He is probably the James Weatherburn who was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 22/10/1797.

In a footnote on p. 228, ‘A.W.’ suggests that John may be the John Wedderburn ‘Merchant in Budal and later in Greenfield and Hankey, Northumberland’, but it now seems much more likely that the John W. in Greenfields was John Weatherburn bap. 1679 at Alnwick (q.v.).

1712

Thomas Weatherburn, [3rd] s. of John W. [‘of Greenfield’, b. 1679, d. 1757 - & Margrate (sic) Pearson (m. 1705 at Eglingham, d. 1755)], bap. 12/9/1712 at Alnwick.  [Thomas may be the Thomas W. ‘of St. Giles Fields’ who was apprenticed to Jn. However, the ‘elaborate entail’ of 1706 decreed that in the event of the two estates ever devolving on one heir, ‘he should at once denude himself of one of them in favour of the next junior branch of his family’ - in this case, John’s younger brother Henry (b. 1721 - a ‘free mariner’ who spent many years in the East Indies) - and a contract was drawn up on 18/1/1768, between John and Henry, as to the terms on which John would relinquish Gosford. - In 1770 a law-suit was brought by Henry (and his younger brother Alexander W. ‘of St. Germains’), to decide whether Henry should immediately enter into possession of the Gosford estates or wait until the demise of Sir Peter.  By 1770-71 the House of Lords had ruled in Henry’s favour & he was granted the great seal charter of Gosford on 6/8/1771, after which John was always called ‘Halkett’ or ‘Wedderburn-Halkett’ of Pitfirrane. - On Sir Peter’s death in 1779 John succeeded him as 3rd Bt. of Gosford.

(On W.B. p. 383, the year of Henry’s birth is given incorrectly as 1722.) - Henry was ‘bred to the sea’ and settled at Bengal as a free mariner soon after 1740. - He is said to have m. his first wife, Alice,  c1747, “but no-one could mind Alice’s surname”.   By her he had 2 sons & 3 daughters: James (‘buried at Calcutta 13/10/1751’); Charles (‘infant, buried at Calcutta, 16/7/1755); Mary (the eldest, & only surviving, child, b. 1748, q.v.); Janetta (‘buried at Calcutta 21/4/1753’); & Elizabeth (‘bap. at Fort William, Bengal, 20/8/1766 who must have died before 1768, when her sister Mary is called her father’s only child’). - Henry m. ii) at Edinburgh, on 31/1/1768, Miss Mary Belsches [d. of John Belsches of Innermay, Perthshire] but she died at Calcutta in July 1771, leaving no issue. - He m. iii) at Calcutta, on 4/3/1773, Alice Tetley, who survived him, but died before 1806, by whom he had one surviving daughter, Elizabeth (bap. 12/3/1776 at Calcutta, who m. Henry was left in command of the forts of Janna and Tobehannach, then served on board Captain Wilson’s ship….. He joined the army and remained with it as a volunteer until hostilities (with the Dutch) were over, when he returned to the merchant service as captain of one of Henry Vansittart’s traders”.  “Henry returned home before 1767, in which year he is described as ‘late of Bengal’ and, in the following year, he entered into an elaborate contract with his brother John [b. 1720, q.v.] as to the terms on which, in the event of the House of Lords deciding in his favour, he would take possession of Gosford, and executed a bond of provision, 2 Feb. 1768, in favour of his daughter Mary, then his only child. In this same year he married, at Edinburgh, his second wife, and at once returned to Calcutta, ‘as appears from a bond by him dated there 1 Oct. 1769.’  In 1769, Henry was restored to the office of Master Intendant (sic) of Marine, a post which he held until his death, and upon the decision of the House of Lords being in his favour, 19 March 1770, he got a great seal charter of Gosford, 6 Aug. 1771, but did not return home, a factory by him to his uncle of S. Germain’s, to deal with a bond for £1000 granted by Belsches of Innermay being dated 25 March 1774”. - A year before his death Henry was endeavouring to sell Gosford but nothing was done until after his death”.  Henry died at Calcutta on 17/11/1777 and Gosford then became the property of his elder surviving daughter Mary (b. 1748, wife of Lt.-Col. Sir John Cumming), who in 1781 sold it to an Edinburgh accountant, Alexander Farquharson. - In 1784, Mr. Farquharson sold Gosford to Francis, 5th Earl of Wemyss.  The present (rebuilt) Gosford House still belongs to his descendants.  [N.B.  Henry succeeded to the estates of Gosford in 1771, while his brother John retained the estates of Pitfirranne and, in 1779, on the death of his cousin Sir Peter Halkett, John succeeded him as Sir John Wedderburn-Halkett ‘of Pitfirrane’, 4th Bt. of Gosford. Mary Bowcock, widow of Henry Bowcock, tavern-keeper, between July 1730 and June 1731. In June 1736, “Wetherburn’s Tavern” (probably on the site of his wife’s later husband’s Inn) was well-known and in 1738 Henry bought two further plots of land from Benjamin Harrison, Gent., who had inherited them from his father, Nathaniel Harrison of Surry County in 1727.  By 1742, Henry was keeping the “Raleigh Tavern”. (In connection with Henry’s purchase of the plot on which that stood, a deed gives the names of John Blair, John Dixon, David Meade, Patrick Barclay, Alexander McKenzie and James Murray, merchants.) Peter Wedderburn [afterwards Halkett - Sir Peter Halkett ‘of Pitfirrane’, 2nd Bt. of Gosford in 1746 (b. 1695, e.s. of Sir Peter W., 1st Bt. of Gosford, & Janet Halkett (m. c1694)] m. ‘before 1738’ [it was probably in 1731-32] Lady Æmilia Stewart [2nd d. of Francis, 7th Earl of Moray, & the Hon. Jean Elphinstone (2nd d. of John, 4th Lord Balmerino - whose son - like Sir John Wedderburn 5th Bt. of Blackness - was executed in 1746).] - Peter & Lady Æmilia had 3 sons and probably 4 daughters: Jean (b. 1732); Janet (b. 1735); another Jean (b. 1742) & Emilia (b. 1744). - The sons were Peter, Francis & James (although, because the Gosford branch of the Wedderburn family would not permit ‘A.W.’ access to their archives, their dates of birth have not been ascertained.). - Sir Peter, then Colonel of the 44th Regiment, was killed in battle in America in 1755. He was succeeded as 3rd Bt. of Gosford by his e.s. Peter, even though Peter ‘was afflicted from birth with a weakness of mind’.  The 2nd son, Francis, entered the army and was gazetted a captain in Halkett’s foot in 1751. He was later a major in the Black Watch. - Because of Peter’s mental condition, their father (by a settlement dated 14/10/1751) had settled the estates of Pitfirrane on his second and third sons, with their cousin John Wedderburn (b. 1720) as heir to both title and estate in the event of Francis & James dying without male issue. - Francis therefore succeeded to the estates on his father’s death but he died unm. at Naples in 1760. - The remains of both his father and his younger brother James are said to have identified in 1756-57 by Major Francis Halkett, “but, oddly enough, a different year - 1758 - is given for his [James’s] date of death in the Court of Session papers printed in the family law-suit in 1761, in which it is stated that ‘James died in 1758’, and again that ‘Major (Francis) Halkett died at Naples 11 Nov. last (1760) and his younger brother, James, two years before’, both of them unmarried”.  Whichever date is correct for James’s death, both younger brothers predeceased Sir Peter, the 3rd Bt., so when he died, in 1779, it was his ‘curator’, his cousin John Wedderburn (b. 1720, q.v.), who succeeded him and became Sir John Wedderburn-Halkett of Pitfirrane, 4th Bt. of Gosford. - Lady Æmilia Halkett died at Inveresk, co. Midlothian, on 18/5/1781 (another source states that she died on 27/6/1781 at Inverness.)

Sir Henry Erskine of Alva, Bt.  [James (b. 1762), had succeeded his father in the baronetcy of Alva in 1765 and in 1769 he took the additional name of ‘St. Clair’ before that of Erskine. On succeeding to the Earldom of Rosslyn, he obtained a further licence, on 14/2/1805, to quarter the arms of Wedderburn with his own. He died on 17/1/1837, leaving two sons.  “Alexander at one time lived a good deal at Harrogate. There is a curious old house on the common here called ‘Wedderburn House’. It was built and the grounds enclosed and planted by Alexander Wedderburn, Lord Loughboro’, about 1775. It was sold, I believe, by his nephew the late (second) Earl of Rosslyn, and oddly enough belongs now to a Mr. Weatherburn of Leeds”.  [Alexander’s first wife would seem to be related to Mr. William Dawson of Kelso, Roxburghshire, a noted agriculturist of his day.

He bequeathed to his 3 sons £300 to be shared between them and £10 to his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Richard Birkley. [A Thomas W. ‘of Horncliffe Staires’ was buried at Norham on 2/1/1831, aged 88.  [It seems likely that he is this Thomas.]

1742

Elizabeth Widerbourn (sic), [e.] d. of John Weatherbourn [bap. 1695, d. 1766, & Margaret Dixon (m. 1741 at Gosforth)], bap. 18/3/1742 at Newcastle upon Tyne, Groat Market Meeting House - NC.  Elizabeth m. 1742

Henry Weatherburn m. Anne Tindal on 3/6/1742 at Belford.  Henry could be the --- Wedderburn, ‘a carrier between Berwick & Edinburgh’, whose elder son Henry is said in the W.B. to have been born in 1744, and whose younger son James is said to have been b. 1745-50. (The elder son Henry would seem to be the Henry Weatherburn bap. at Chatton in 1745, q.v., & the younger s. the James Weatherburn bap. at Norham in 1756, q.v.) - However, if Henry senior is ‘the carrier’, then Henry bap. 1745 is his second (not ‘elder’) son, & James bap. 1756 is his third son, as Henry (& Anne Tindal) apparently had an ‘ante-nuptial’ son Thomas, ‘s. of Henry W. of Hesleridge’ (?Hazlerigg - between Chatton & Belford), bap. at Chatton on 17/3/1742 (who would seem to be the Thomas W. ‘of Horncliffe Staires’ who was buried at Norham on 2/1/1831, aged 88). - ‘The carrier’ is also said to have had 2 daughters, Agnes & ---, and ‘he may have had other issue’.  [No baptism of Agnes can be found but Elizabeth Wetherburn (bap. 1752 at Norham) is probably the unnamed younger daughter.] - ‘The carrier’ probably died in 1782. [The dates in brackets after Henry W.’s name on W.B. p. 500 are 1744-1782, although, in the text, it says that he died in 1832, so it seems likely that it was Henry’s father, the carrier, who died in 1782.] - [See Henry Wedderburn, b. 1744, & Henry Weatherburn, bap. 1745.]

1742

Anne Widerburn (sic), [e.] d. of Luke Weatherbourn [?b. 1706, & Mary Bell (m. 1736 at Gosforth)], bap. 10/8/1742 at Newcastle upon Tyne, Groat Market Meeting House -NC.

George is probably the George Weatherburn who was buried at Holy Trinity, Berwick, Northumberland, on 4/2/1767.

1744

John Weatherburn [John Wetherburn (b. 1682), whose wife Ann Ferguson (m. 1706, d. 1732)] is probably the John Weatherburn who was buried at Holy Trinity, Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland, on 20/5/1744.

James Weatherburn [bap. 1710, e.s. of John W., b. 1682, & Anne Ferguson (m. 1706)] m. Jane Hay on 6/12/1743 at Berwick on Tweed. [James Wedderburn  m. Jean Hay on 25/11/1744 at Eyemouth. (This is perhaps the date when Banns were called in Anne’s home parish?) - James Weatherburn was admitted a Freeman in 1730. -  James & Jean apparently had 2 daughters & 2 sons: Ann, bap. 22/10/1745; John, bap. 2/12/1747 ; Robert, bap. 3/5/1751 all bap. at B-on-T as ‘Weatherburn’ - & Margaret, whose bap. has not been found but who is mentioned in her uncle John’s Will in 1762, may be the Margaret Weatherburn who m. James Mills at Berwick on 1/3/1781 (q.v.). -  Jean must be ‘Jane, wife of James Weatherburn’, who was buried at Holy Trinity, B-on-T, on 24/10/1796. [In a History of B-on-T, written by John Fuller in 1799, James Widderburn ‘b. in or before 1710, who was admitted a Freeman in 1731’, is said to be the father of the corporation of Berwick. He was then living in Castlegate: “a suburb of B-on T situated without the walls, near the north west part of the town. It consists of one broad street running nearly north, being the outlet to the great north road; and a long range of houses stretching from the further end of Castle-gate eastwards, called ‘Greenses’, principally inhabited by fishermen & labourers”. ] - James is probably the James Weatherburn who was buried at Holy Trinity, Berwick, on 22/10/1797.

 1744

Henry Wedderburn, ‘elder son of --- Wedderburn, probably of Allerdean, co. Northumberland, employed as a carrier between Berwick and Edinburgh’, is said in the W.B. to have been born in 1744.  [See next entry.]

1745

Henry Weatherburn, [2nd] s. of Henry W. ‘of Hesleridge’ [& Anne Tindal (m. 1742, q.v.)], bap. 5/5/1745 at Chatton.   [‘Hesleridge’ from Parish reg. Bob adds: “No place-name of ‘Hesleridge’ appears on map, but ‘Hazelrigg’ between Chatton and Belford, a bit towards Lowick seems the likely place”.)] - It seems highly probable that Henry’s father, Henry Weatherburn of Hesleridge [?Hazelrigg], is the  --- Wedderburn, ‘probably of Allerdean, co. Northumberland, employed as a carrier between Berwick and Edinburgh’ - the first person mentioned in the account of “The Wedderburns at Allerdean, Horncliff, and Newcastle 1744-1896”. [He appears to be the Henry Weatherburn who m. Anne Tindal at Belford in 1742.] - The carrier’s son Henry is said in the W.B. to have been born in 1744. It is stated that this Henry, a salmon-fisher, “came from Aberdeen to Loanend (but in ‘Corrections & Additions’, says ‘for Aberdeen read Allerdean’) where he died in 1832 and was buried in Norham”. (The dates in brackets after Henry W.’s name on W.B. p. 500 are 1744-1782, although, in the text, it says that he died in 1832, so it seems likely that it was Henry’s father, the carrier, who died in 1782.) - Henry Weatherburn m. Margaret Kirton (m. not found). -  In the W.B. it says that they had 2 sons: Henry, ‘b. about 1775, who went to Horncliffe’ (see bap. 1777); & John, ‘who is said to have been in the service of the United States, and to have died in the China Seas, unmarried’. (No dates are given for John, but see 1780.) - Henry and Margaret apparently also had 2 daughters: Christian (bap. 1772, q.v.) & Agnes (bap. 1774, q.v. - the names ‘Agnes’ & ‘Ann’ were often used interchangeably  - ‘A.W.’), although they are not shown in the W.B. - Margaret (née Kirton) is said to have died at Loanend ‘aged 33’. - Margaret, ‘wife of Henry Weatherburn of Loan End’, was buried at Norham on 11/9/1795 & Henry Weatherburn ‘of Loan End’ was buried at Norham on 21/5/1833, aged 88. [See also James Weatherburn bap. 1756.]

William Nicholson at Gosforth on 15/3/1767. [This must be the m. of this Margaret or Margaret bap. 6/8/1746 (2ndd. of Luke W., b. 1706, & ?Mary Bell , m. 1736) - or perhaps a 2nd m. of her mother Margaret (née Dixon)?

Mrs. Hewett “was certainly alive in 1757”. - Two daughters of Marion Scrymgeour’s sister Jean - Margaret & Janet Watson (‘they must have been born after 1740’) - are named. They lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with their aunt, Mrs. Hewett , “who at one time, 1745, proposed that Janet should go and live with her maternal (great) uncle, Dr. Wedderburn in Dundee”.

1746

Alexander Hewett (said to be the only surv. s. of George Hewett & Marion Scrymgeour) ‘was in business in Chester le Street, Durham, in 1746’.  He appears to have had a number of children: “In 1773, Mrs. Hewett, six children and a servant went from Dundee to London”; in 1781, “Fleming Scrymgeour wrote to Alexander Scrymgeour-Wedderburn in regard to the expense of his outfit for merchant-shipping service in the West Indies”; in 1787 “a Scrymgeour Hewett is named in an account for school books”. - There was also a Mary Hewett, “named in a note of annuities and legacies left by the settlement of Janet Scrymgeour (‘Mrs. Gillespie, senior’)”.  Mrs. Hewett was deceased by 1777. ‘A.W.’ states also: “Mr. Henry Scrymgeour-Wedderburn (b. 1755), now of Wedderburn & Birkhill, has no knowledge of any living descendants of these two aunts of his grandfather (Marion & Jean Scrymgeour - see preceding entry) and believes their lines to be extinct”.  [On W.B. p. 501 it shows that John Wedderburn ‘b. 1804’ (3rd son of Henry W., ‘b. c1775’ - bap. 1777 - & Agnes Milvin) m. Mary Hewitt (m. not found). - Acc. to the W.B., John died at Norham in 1882, aged 78 (i.e. b. c1804) but the John Wedderburn who was baptised at Spittal United Presbyterian Church in 1804 is shown in the Spittal registers as ‘s. of Henry & Margaret Wedderburn of Loanend, ‘b. 2/12/1780’ (i.e. he is apparently  the John W., s. of Henry b. 1744 - bap. 1745 - & Margaret Kirton, ‘who died in the China Seas, unmarried’ (W.B. p. 500), so there seems to be some confusion! - See ‘John Wedderburn’ 1780 & 1804.]

Elizabeth apparently had a 3 sons named Ralph (one bap. at Longbenton in 1748 & two bap. at Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1753 & 1757); a s. Richard (bap. 1751 at N-on-T) & a daughter Elizabeth (bap. there in 1754).

1747

John Weatherburn, ‘s. of William or James Weatherburn’, bap. 2/12/1747 at Berwick upon Tweed.   [John is the e.s. of James Wedderburn who m. Jean Hay in 1744 (q.v.).] - In 1762, John was left £100 in the Will of his uncle John Weatherburn (bap. 1717) and was also to inherit property in B-on-Tweed left to his father James by John. - John W. was indentured as Apprentice to Chris Patten of Berwick on Tweed, Carpenter, in 1763. - John, ‘e.s. of James’, was admitted a Freeman of B-on-T on 11/11/1768. John Weatherburn, Carpenter in London, is shown in the Freemen’s Rolls between 1774 and 1817 (as was his brother Robert, b. 1751) but he did not vote in the 1820 parliamentary election at Berwick and was absent from the 1821 Roll, so if, as seems likely, the ‘Widow of John Weatherburn’ shown in the Berwick Freemen’s Roll on 9/5/1818 is this John’s widow, John must have died in 1817 or early 1818. - [Admon. of the estate of Ann W. (bap. 1745) was granted to her brother John in 1813 (q.v.).]

1747

Elisha Weatherburn [afterwards ‘Elias’], s. of William W., bap. 16/12/1747 at Berwick upon Tweed.   [Elias is the elder s. of William W. (b. 1720, d. 1753) & Elizabeth Coltrop (m. 1746). - In 1762, Elias was left 1/- in the Will of his uncle John Weatherburn (b. 1717). as ‘one of ‘the infant children of his late brother William’. - Elisha was admitted a Freeman of B-on-T on 11/11/1768 (at the same time as his uncle John, b. 1747, in preceding entry), as ‘second oldest son of William Weatherburn (deceased)’. - The Freemen’s records show that in 1774 Elisha was a Cooper. - He is the ‘Elias’ Weatherburn who m. Jane --- (m. not found) and had 3 sons & 3 daughters: William (b. 1777, buried 1788); Jane (b. 1781, d. 1856); Elias (b. 1783, d. 1818); Isabella (b. 1785); George (b. 1788, d. 1794) & Mary Ann (b. 1792). - Elisha was buried - as ‘Elias’ - at B-on-T on 9/12/1792. - In 1793, ‘Jane Weatherburn received monetary relief, while her 3 children were taken into care’. [The Freemen’s Records show that Isabella W., wife of Elias, Freeman 1804, ‘died before 1842’ - but it was Jane, wife of Elisha (aka ‘Elias’) Freeman 1768, who died ‘before 1842’.  She was buried at B-on-T on 2/7/1818, aged 56, but her burial has apparently been incorrectly recorded at Mordington, Berwickshire, as that of ‘Isabella’. (Their son Elias’s wife, Isabella - née White - was buried on 4/10/1850, aged 61.)]  - William Weatherburn (b. c1752, q.v.) would seem to be Elisha’s younger brother, although William was also admitted as a Freeman (in 1776) as ‘2nd son of William’. [William’s e.s. William (b. 1780), was buried on 20/3/1788.]
