John & Robert Wedderburn ‘in Nunnislaw’ [?Wannislaw], co. Roxborough, “are named in an action by Archibald, Earl of Angus, to remove some of his tenants (including Sir Andrew Ainslie of Cleithauch) from Jedburgh Forest in 1575, and John Wedderburn also there”.

Thomas Wedderburn [unidentified] ‘is named in the Dundee Register of the Privy Council, 1/9/1579, in a caution by David Lindsay of Edzell for the appearance of Thomas Wedderburn before the Council on Sept. 5’. - “There is no reference to any such person”, says ‘A.W.’.  “It cannot refer to Thomas b. c1542, who died about Aug. 1574”. “In 1528 and 1546, a Thomas, s. of James Wedderburn, and himself the father of a James W., is named in some notes made by ‘J.W.’ from the Scrymgeour-Wedderburn papers. Here Thomas is in each case an error for Robert. In 1608, Thomas Wedderburn, skipper, father of John and James W. is named.  Here again there is no other reference to any such person and the name is clearly an error for John W., skipper…” [b. c1559, q.v].[See Thomas W., 1580.]

David Wedderburn, ‘legitimised’ e.s. of Robert W. [Vicar of Dundee, b. c1550] & Euphame Coustoun (‘sometimes called Craigtoun’), was b. c1580 in Dundee.  “He took his degree at St. Andrew’s in 1606 and is almost always distinguished by the prefix Magister”. - He was made a burgess of Burntisland in Fife. - David m. Alison Watson in 1619-20 (q.v.). - By Alison he had two sons, Andrew (b. c1620) & Alexander (b. c1621) - but he also had a ‘natural’ son, Robert. [Did Robert perhaps become a Freeman of Berwick-on-Tweed?] - David died at Burntisland in 1628-29.

James Wedderburn [Clerk of Dundee 1626-27], 2nd s. of Alexander W. (1st of Kingennie & Wester Gourdie, b. 1651) & Helen Ramsay [m. 1582], was b. in 1589. “He was always referred to as ‘Mr. James Wedderburn’, to distinguish him from his uncle James, a merchant. - James was the progenitor of the Wedderburns of Blackness (later of Balindean - who took up the representation of the family in the male line on the death, in 1761, of David Wedderburn of Wedderburn, the last male descendant of the Kingennies), and those of Gosford. - He m. Margaret Goldman in 1608 (q.v.). - James was admitted a notary at Edinburgh on 20/6/1609 and was admitted a burgess of Dundee on 10/7/1610. - In 1626 he succeeded his father as Clerk of Dundee but he died the following year. - His eldest son, Alexander (b. 1610, q.v.) was only 17, so James’s elder brother Alexander (2nd of Kingennie, b. 1583) took over the Clerkship until his nephew Alexander was able to assume the position in 1633.

John Wedderburn [afterwards Sir John W. ‘of Gosford’], 5th s. of Alexander W. [1st of Kingennie & Wester Gourdie, nr. Dundee, b. 1561] & Helen Ramsay [m. 1582], was b. c1599.  - “John remained in Scotland for some years and was one of the Regents at St. Leonard’s College, St. Andrew’s University, in Fife.  After 1641 there is no reference to his presence in Dundee for very many years and in 1646 he was made an honorary member of the University of Oxford. He was there with the Court as one of his majesty King Charles I’s Physicians-in-Ordinary”. (“In June 1646, when the city surrendered to Cromwell’s forces he was given a pass signed by Sir Thomas Fairfax to leave the city and go abroad. He may have gone to Holland with the Prince - afterwards Charles II, by whom Sir John was knighted.”) - On 22/3/1650, John Wedderburn, M.D. ‘was fined £10 for delinquency in adhering to the late king in the first war, for which he was never sequestered’. Sir John never married. - He helped his two nephews, Sir Alexander W., Kt. (b. 1610), and Sir Peter W. (b. c1616), Lord (Justice) Gosford, to purchase their estates. [Alexander bought “Blackness”, near Dundee (which was sold by the 4th Bt., in 1741, to Alexander Hunter of Balskelly), & Peter bought “Gosford”, in the parish of Aberlady, co. Haddington (which stayed in the family until 1781, when it was sold to the Earl of Wemyss -in whose family it has since remained’.] - John was in London in 1655 and in Edinburgh in 1657, when he witnessed the baptism of John, son of his nephew Peter and Agnes Dickson. On his return to Scotland “somewhere about 1662”, Sir John resided at Gosford. He occasionally visited Dundee and was a witness at the baptism of Lord Gosford’s 5th [sic] son James [4th son, ] and several others. Sir John died at Gosford in July 1679 - only a few months before his ‘favourite’ nephew, Sir Peter W., Lord Gosford.

The building of the new 15-arch stone bridge over the Tweed was begun in 1610. It was completed in 1634, 24 years, 4 months & 4 days later. Thomas Wetherburn, Quarryman, is shown as worker on this bridge. - “The Mayor, and six of the best and most sufficient Aldermen and Burgesses of the town to subscribe their names to the weekly books of the charges paid to the different workmen:  That at the same time George Nicholson, Esq., now paymaster, be also present to the said weekly payments, and subscribe to the same…”

Alexander Wedderburn [Kt. of Blackness in 1746, Clerk of Dundee 1633-75), e.s. of James W. [Clerk of Dundee, b. 1589] & Margaret Goldman [m. 1608] was b. in 1610. - When his father died in 1627 Alexander was only 17, so his uncle Alexander (2nd of of Kingennie, b. c1583) took over the Clerkship until Alexander was qualified to assume the post. - Alexander m. Matilda Fletcher in 1638 (q.v.). - With financial assistance from his Uncle John, the King’s Physician-in-Ordinary (b. c1599) he acquired various lands, including Blackness, NW of Dundee. - He was one of the Scots Commissioners to the Treaty of Ripon, 1641, and one of the Deputies to the King [Charles I] at Newcastle in 1646, when he was knighted. - On 14/7/1662 his properties were together created into one free barony of Blackness. - Sir Alexander died on 18/11/1675 or 76 (the year not certain).

Peter Wedderburn [knighted c1661, afterwards Lord (Justice) Gosford], 3rd & ygst. s. of James W. [Clerk of Dundee, b. 1859] & Margaret Goldman [m. 1608], was b. in 1616-18.  -“Successful in public life, Sir Peter acquired a considerable amount of property in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh. His most important acquisition, however, was in 1659 when he purchased the landes of Gosfforde in Lowthian from Sir Alexander Auchmontie, laird thereof....”. - A third property acquired by him was Lochill in the barony of Ballincrief, co. East Lothian. “This he got on a disposition from Walter, Lord Torphichen, on 1/8/1661. Two years after, on 4/6/1663, he obtained a great seal charter, creating Lochill itself into a separate barony… On 7/9/1663 he settled these lands on himself, his wife, and their heirs, obtaining to that end another great seal charter uniting these lands to the barony of Gosford. (Further lands were added to the barony in 1670.)  - He was knighted by the newly restored King Charles II c1661 and on 17/6/1668 was appointed a lord-of-session with the title Lord Gosford. - Sir Peter was married three times, ‘though all previous histories of the family have ignored his first and third marriages’.- He m. i) Christian Gibson, in 1649 (q.v.); ii) Agnes Dickson, in 1653 (q.v.) and iii) Elizabeth Goldman (widow of Robert Chaplaine), in 1677 (q.v.). - Sir Peter Wedderburn, Lord Gosford, died at Gosford on 11/11/1679.

He was created a Baronet of Scotland by Queen Anne, by Patent on 9/8/1704, ‘to him and his heirs male for ever’. - Sir John died ‘early in 1706’ (the date not quite fixed). - He was succeeded as 2nd Bt. of Blackness by his e.s. Alexander (b. 1672, q.v.).

[See next entry.] - This James was described as ‘in Rickelsyde of Coldingham’ on 7/6/1653, when he and his wife got a further sasine of land in the barony of the Law, and on 18-19/10/1661, when they got sasine of a charter by George Home and his curators of the ‘Whoile Rige’. “He is no doubt to be identified with the James W. in Coldingham, who, with Sir James Cockburn of Prendergast and others, was a defendant in a summons by Jean, d. of George Home of Heiringtoun, on which a decree was obtained on 17/2/1679”.  He may be the James Wedderburn buried on 26/5/1705 at Coldingham.

Margaret Browne at Berwick upon Tweed on 14/11/1624, it seems questionable whether this Robert is their son.) - Robert Wedderburn, ‘e.s. to his father John Wedderburn’, was admitted a Freeman of B-on-T on 23/12/1670 (q.v.). - Robert appears to have married four times: i) Jane Nicholson, on 18/2/1679 (q.v.); ii) Ann Crosby on 23/8/1681 (q.v.); iii) Margery Wright, on 16/7/1685 (q.v.); & iv) Elizabeth --- (marriage date unknown but probably between 1716 and 1720). - By Jane Nicholson Robert probably had a daughter Elenor Weatherbourne (bap. 1679), who is perhaps the Eleanor Wedderburn buried in 1698; by Ann Crosby, Robert seems to have had a son John Wetherburn (bap. 1682) & a daughter Margaret Wedderburne (bap. 1684); and, by Elizabeth ---, Robert probably had two sons, George Weatherburn (bur. 23/7/1720) & George (b. c1721), who was apprenticed on 9/6/1737 as ‘George Wedderburn, s. of Robert W. late of Berwick, Burges, deceased, to Edward Cook, Burgess, Butcher.’ - [Robert Weatherburn (b. 1651) was removed as a Freeman 1709-1712 but was readmitted, as Robert Wedderburn, on 23/1/1712.] - Robert was also fined 10/- on 19/5/1727 by the Freemen ‘as rents for the grass’ after he had allowed the cattle of John Harkett, an unfreeman, on the town wasteland. (John ‘Harkett’ may be Robert’s grandson John Hacquith, s. of his daughter Margaret & her husband, soldier John Hacquith (m. 18/6/1704), whom Robert is said to have cared for after his father left town and took him on as an apprentice. This grandson ‘was an indifferent butcher and he gave up the trade’ but this means that Robert himself must have been a butcher. - Robert Weatherburn was buried at Holy Trinity, B-on-T, on 31/8/1727.  [He is shown on the 1727 Freemen’s Roll with an annotation ‘Mort’.] - Elizabeth Weatherburn, ‘widow of Robert Weatherburn’, asked for relief from the Freemen of Berwick-on-Tweed in 1730.

Peebles, a lord-of-session) who, in 1665, m. Helen Wedderburn (b. 1646), 3rd d. of Sir Alexander W., Kt. of Blackness, & Matilda Fletcher.] -  Peter & Agnes had 5 sons & 4 daughters. (Three of the daughters died young but the youngest, Agnes, b. 1658, m. David Haliburton of Pitcur on 8/9/1674, at Aberlady. She died before 20/2/1700, leaving issue.) - The three surviving sons were: John (b. 1657); Peter (b. 1659-60); & Alexander (b. c1660). Agnes died between Feb. 1665 (when her youngest son was born) and 15/6/1677, when her husband m. iii) Elizabeth Goldman. (W.B. p. 369) - Peter was knighted by Charles II c1661 and appointed a lord-of-session with the title of Lord Gosford in 1668. - He died at Gosford on 11/11/1679.

Patrick’s brother William Kyd in 1663, had 3 sons & 3 daughters. (One of their daughters, Margaret Kyd, m. John Paterson of Craigie.) - ‘A grandson of Margaret’s brother James (b. 1666), Capt. James Kyd, R.N. (b. ?1723, s. of George Kyd of Woodhill & Craigie, & Elizabeth, d. of the Hon. Alexander Maitland, 4th s. of the 3rd Earl of Lauderdale), sold Craigie and Woodhill and built Elie Lodge’. - His wife Hannah, d. of … Bevis, of Southampton, died at Elie in 1757. Their eldest daughter, Mary Kyd, m. Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel ‘who took the name of Lawson for the estate of Cramlington, Northumberland. - Their son, Mansfeldt, sold Cramlington and died without issue, leaving the family pictures to his sister Hannah, wife of Col. He was also a member of parliament...”. - In 1679 he had a ‘natural son’, David (bap. at Aberlady on 22/6/1679, q.v.). - “In 1680, following his father’s death, John was retoured heir to him in his various lands..… and got sasine thereon 20 May 1680”. - In 1685 he attained the rank of Lieut.-Col. of Dragoons “but, on 3 June 1686, for a reason which is not given, [he] was removed from this post by the privy council, pursuant to a letter of the King, dated 22 May in that year.” “Early in 1688 John again went abroad, with the consent of various persons including his cousin, Blackness, and, before doing so, on Feb. 14, both made a will  and granted a factory to his youngest brother, Alexander, to manage his affairs during his absence”. (He also at this time renounced to Sir John Nisbet of Dirleston - sic - yet another annual rent of 6,000 merks on Thirleston and Innerwick. - In his Will, John nominated as his executor his brother Peter and, failing him, his youngest brother, Alexander, as “tutore to David Wedderburn, my natural son”. - John’s journey abroad was his last “for he was drowned in shipwreck off Calais 26 May 1688”.  “His body was apparently recovered, as he is stated to have been buried in his parish church at Aberlady on 9th July thereafter.”

He was served heir to his father Sir Peter (Lord Gosford), and to his brother John, 11-21 Oct. 1688. - He must, I think, have left the army within a year or two, as from 1690 on, his name occurs in civil matters, e.g. as a member of the Scottish Parliament…..”. Her implements of Husbandry she left to her son John and cash sums to her grandson Thomas Weatherburn (?b. 1712) and her son-in-law Ralph Elder (?husband of her daughter Margaret) . The second part of the article refers to two men named John Weatherburn, father and son, who seem to have been particularly active in 1711 and 1736 respectively. I think the elder may be John W., bap 19/11/1657 at B-on-Tweed, while the son may be this John W., bap 20/11/1679 at Alnwick (q.v.).] - Margaret Weatherburn died at Alnwick in 1755 & John Weatherburn died there in 1757 (q.v.). - [A newspaper article, published in refers to John’s gravestone there at Alnwick.  It reads: “The family of Weatherburn is of old date. (In this and some other entries he is called Patrick.) Later on he was appointed secretary to the exercise and is so described in 1732…”. Peter m. He did not long retain this post, however, for on the death of Thomas Hay of Huntingdon he was raised to the bench, and resigned both it and his secretaryship of the excise. He took his seat in the Court of Session on 24 July 1755 but his career as a judge was soon cut shortby his death.  - Lord Chesterhall died on 11/8/1756 and was buried in Grey Friars’ Cemetery (Edinburgh).

John (b. 1700) succeeded him as 3rd Bt. of Blackness.  - [In 1718, John sold the estates to his father’s cousin Alexander, b. 1675 (e.s. of James W., & Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Davidson), who was then sheriff clerk of Forfar (having been deposed as Clerk of Dundee the previous year). - Until then, Alexander had managed the estates on young John’s behalf.  - On John’s early death, in 1723, unm. (his brothers having predeceased him), it was this Alexander who became the 4th Bt. of Blackness.

He is so described in the confirmation of his Will, which was given up at Edinburgh by Mr. Peter Wedderburn, advocate, his brother german, next-of-kin, and executor on 28 Feb. 1734.  His brothers and sisters are all named in a decreet arbital 18, 20 Jan. 1735”. - Alexander died unm. on 8/2/1734”.

[In accordance with the elaborate entail drawn up by their parents in 1706, the estates of Gosford were settled on Peter’s younger brother Charles Wedderburn (b. 1696, q.v.)]  “In 1734 Peter was M.P. for Dumfermline and later, in 1739, for Inverkeithing. His career, however, was chiefly military”. - ‘Before 1738’ (see 1732)  Peter m. Lady Æmilia Stewart.  - “Having early entered the army, he became a Major in the Scots Fusiliers in 1739 and after two years was promoted to Lieut.-Colonel, first of Houghton’s and then of Lee’s regiment”. (Exceptionally for a Wedderburn, in the 1745 uprising he was on the Government side. He was present at the battle of Gladsmuir as a captain in Lee’s regiment.) - On his father’s death in 1746, Peter succeeded him as 2nd Bt. of Gosford. In 1748 he was again preferred and on Col. Lee’s death, on 9 March 1751, Sir Peter became Colonel of his regiment…. “In 1754 he embarked for America, in command of the 44th regiment of foot, and acted on all occasions with distinguished gallantry, but unfortunately, accompanying General Bardock’s disastrous expedition against Fort du Quêsne on the banks of the river Monogabela [sic], he fell with that officer and his own son, James Halkett*, on 9 July 1755 in the defeat by the Indians.  Sir Peter Halkett, said a contemporary, was killed on the spot”. Sir Peter was succeeded as 3rd Bt. of Gosford by his e.s. Peter.  [*See more details under parents’ m. in 1732.]

Therefore, on his father’s death in 1746, Charles (as the second son) inherited the estates of Gosford, while his elder brother Peter (b. 1695) succeeded to the estates of Pifirrane and became the 2nd Bt. of Gosford. - Charles died at Gosford in 1753-54.
