1816
James Wedderburn [b. 1793] m. Margaret Lumsden [d. of David Lumsden, surgeon] on 25/3/1816 at Peterhead. ‘A.W.’ says that James, described as ‘of Banff’, m. Margaret Duncan, and that ‘his only son George’ m. Margaret Lumsden - However it was James who m. Margaret Lumsden, and George (bap. 2/4/1816) was not their only son, but the eldest child of a large family. [See *** above, after 1793 entry.] - James’s mother would seem to be Janet Duncan, who m. at Old Meldrum, in 1792, William W. (bap. 5/5/1762), the youngest s. of William W. ‘in Wardend of Old Meldrum’ (which makes him a first cousin of Joseph W., ‘farmer in New Wells’, b. 1782). - In the W.B., George is said to have had [by his wife, Margaret Lumsden,“who died at Peterhead on 3/11/1864, aged 67”] 2 sons, James & Alexander, & 3 daughters, Janet, Rachel & Margaret, but registers show that these children, and others, were George’s younger brothers and sisters: George was bap. in 1816 - the others are: William (b. 1819); Janet (b. 1823); Alexander James (b. 1824); Rachel (b. 1826); James (b. 1828); Herries (b. 1830); John (b. 1832); Margaret (b. 1834) & Williamina (b. 1836). - No dates of birth are given in the W.B. for James or George but ‘A.W.’ states that James was ‘drowned in 1848’ and that George died ‘before December 1859’. (James Wedderburn was aged 55 when he drowned, which confirms his d.o.b. as c1793.) James Wedderburn (of North Shore, Peterhead) drowned off Peterhead on 22/8/1848, aged 55. Margaret died at Peterhead on 3/11/1864, aged 67.
1816

Margaret Lumsden ‘and to have had 2 sons & 3 daughters’ butit seems clear that Margaret Lumsden was George’s mother (wife of James ‘of Banff’) and that George was their eldest (not ‘only’) son and the children said to be his are his younger brothers and sisters.] “George died before 12 Dec. 1859”. [See *** above [1793] and James W. ‘of Banff’, 1816.]
1816

[On W.B. shows that William Wedderburn, mason in Aberdeen, was buried on 23/11/1819 but this is incorrect.] The funeral service was held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral but as St. Andrew’s has never had its own burial ground he was probably buried in Old Aberdeen Burial ground. William drew up a ‘Deed of Settlement’ in 1818 by which he arranged annuities for his widow Elizabeth & his sister Catherine, and for the whole free remainder and residue of his Estate to be divided equally between his daughter Jane, his son Alexander and Jane Wedderburn, the daughter of his deceased son William. - Elizabeth Wedderburn, alias Smith, ‘relict of William Wedderburn sometime Mason & Stone Merchant in Aberdeen’, died on 6/9/1829.
