Wedderburn History

A chronological list of Wedderburns in the Angus (formerly Forfarshire), Fife, Perth, Lanarkshire, East, Mid & West Lothian, Stirlingshire & Berwickshire  plus a very few in the Argyllshire, Clackmannanshire, Peebles, Renfrewshire, Roxburghshire & Selkirk, with additional details taken from ‘The Wedderburn Book’.  Also included are details of  some ‘Weatherburns’, which spelling of the name is widely used in Northumberland, plus a few Jamaican records.  Covers the years 1850-1920


1850

 Joseph Robert Maclagan [afterwards Maclagan Wedderburn] 6th & ygst. s. of Katharine Stormonth [b. 1814 - Maclagan-Wedderburn ‘of Pearsie’ from 1870] & the Rev. James Maclagan, D.D. [m. 1834], was b. 16/10/1850 at Aberdeen.  - “Joseph was admitted a Writer to the Signet in 1876 and practised at Edinburgh.  In 1898 he was living, unm., at 3 Glencairn Crescent, Edinburgh”.  (W.B. p. 328)


1850

 Harry George Wedderburn, 2nd s. of Andrew W. [b. 1821, Wedderburn-Maxwell from 1879] & Joanna Keir [m. 1847], was b. 18/11/1850 at Cuddapah, Madras.  -“Harry was educated at Glenalmond & Balliol College before being admitted as a student of the Inner Temple on 20/4/1870. He was called to the Bar in 1875 and went to India where he practised in Madras”. - He m. Jane Trevelyan Carmichael at Madras in 1881 (q.v.).  - [They had 2 sons & 3 daughters.]  - (W.B. p. 316 + inked-in additions to family-tree on p. 315 of a copy of the W.B. in the Nat. Library of Scotland).


1851

 Margaret Steel [bap. 14/5/1826 at Wells Street Scotch Church, St. Marylebone, London, dau. of George Steel & Alice (Weatherburn, 1786 at B-on-Tweed, d. 1845)] m. Lauchlan Carmichael on 20/6/1851 at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh.  [When William Weatherburn, Customs’ Officer (b. 1794 at B-on-Tweed) died in 1870 he left a legacy to his niece Margaret Steel, ‘wife of Lachland (sic) Carmichael, Chemist in Queensland, Australia.’ (See William’s Will.)]  


1852

 Mary Christian Foote Maclagan [afterwards Maclagan-Wedderburn], 4th & ygst. d. of Katharine Stormonth [b. 1814 - Macglagan-Wedderburn ‘of Pearsie’ from 1870] & the Rev. James Maclagan, D.D. [m. 1834], was b. 23/7/1852 at Aberdeen.  (W.B. p. 328) - In the 1881 Census, Mary, unm., aged 28, was living with her widowed mother & sister Isabella at 44 Heriot Row, Edinburgh. - In the 1891 Census, Mary was living with her mother & sister in Edinburgh. - Her mother died in April 1891 but Mary was still unm. & living in Edinburgh with Isabella in 1898.


1852

 Frederick Lewis Scrymgeour-Wedderburn [b. 1808] m. [as his 2nd (?or 3rd) wife] Selina Mary Garth [d. of Captain Thomas Garth, R.N., of Haines Hill, Berks.] on 31/8/1852 at Balmerino.  (Another source shows Frederick & Selina were m. at Hurst Church, Berks.) - [Frederick Lewis S-W apparently m. i) Caroline Mallet Mytton on 27/3/1836 (q.v.).] - By the Hon. Helen Arbuthnott (m. 1839) Frederick had a son, Henry (b. 1840) but Lady Helen died five days after his birth. - By Selina, Frederick had 2 more sons & 3 daughters: Mary (b. 1853, d. 1867); Charlotte Louisa (b. 1855); Selina Elgiva (b. 1856); Frederick Lewis (b. 1858, d. 1865) & Alexander (b. 1859). - On the death of his father, in 1841, Frederick had succeeded to the estates of ‘Wedderburn’ (nr. Dundee) & ‘Birkhill’ (Fife). - Frederick died at Birkhill on 16/8/1874 and was succeeded by his son Henry (b. 1840) - (W.B. pp. 182-83) - In the 1881 Census, his widow Selina, a Fundholder, aged 56, was living at Sandleford Lodge, Sandleford, Berkshire, with her 2 surviving daughters, plus 2 ‘Visitors’ & 5 servants. - In the 1901 Census, Selina M.S. Wedderburn, a widow aged 76 (‘b. Hurst, Berks.’), was ‘Living on own Means’ with her brother Thomas Garth, Landed Proprietor, aged 80 (‘b. London’); her daughter Charlotte, aged 45 (‘b. Scotland’), ‘Living on own Means’, & several Servants, at Haines Hill House, St. Nicholas, Hurst Berks. - Selina died at Haines Hill, Twyford, Berks., on 18/10/1902.  (Probate was granted to Alexander S-W, the executor, Col. in the Royal Artillery). - Estate valued at £5,646.

1853

 John Wedderburn $ [Poulterer, b. 1814, younger s. of Peter W., Coachman (b. c1784, d. 1825), & Agnes Walker (m. 1804)] m. Elizabeth Campbell on 2/10/1853 at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh. John died at 75, Canongate, Edinburgh, on 10/3/1861, aged 46. - In the 1881 Census, Elizabeth Wedderburn, a widow aged 74 (‘b. Edinburgh’), Annuitant, was living at 4 St. Patrick Sq., St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh. - Elizabeth died at Queensbury House, Canongate, on 8/5/1892, aged 85. (Edin. Reg. House - Misc. Refs. Scottish Records, W.B. p. 498 - & Death entry from Scotland’s People.]


1853

 Mary Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, e.d. of Frederick Scrymgeour-W. [b. 1808] by his 2nd [?or 3rd] wife, Selina Garth [m. 1852] was b. 10/12/1853 at Edinburgh. - “Mary died at Birkhill on 15/3/1867, aged 13, and was buried at Balmerino”.  (W.B. p. 183)


1853

 Alice Wedderburn, elder d. of Andrew W. [b. 1821, Wedderburn-Maxwell from 1879] & Joanna Keir [m. 1847], was b. 10/12/1853 at Cuddapah, Madras.  - “In 1898 Alice was living at Oxford”.  (W.B. p. 317) - In the 1901 Census, Alice Wedderburn, aged 48 (‘b. India’) was still at Oxford, a Boarder in the home of Ann Bradford, University Lodging House Keeper, aged 50 (‘b. Whimple, Devon’), at 28 Walton St., Oxford. - In the 1911 Census, Alice Wedderburn, unm. aged 58, Private Means (‘b. Madras Presidence, India’), was a Visitor at the home of Lodging House Keeper Mrs. Rawlings at 31 St. James Square, Bath, Somerset, with Boarder  Jane Hill, a Widow aged 40, Maid (‘b. Leslie, Fife’). - Alice Wedderburn died in Sept. qtr. 1937, aged 84. (Deaths’ Index Weymouth 5a 283) - She was buried at All Saints, Wyke Regis, Dorset, on 18/8/1937.  


1854

 Thomas Weatherburn, s. of Thomas W. [Engine Builder, ‘s. of Robert W., Shipwright’ (b. 1796 - & Sarah Johnson] & Elizabeth Rogers Ferguson [m. 1851 at S. Shields, Durham], bap. 11/3/1854 at Leith North. - Thomas m. Elizabeth Jane Jackson at South Shields [Durham] in the Sept. qtr. of 1882. (Marriages’ Index 10a 950 - ) - They had 2 daughters & a son born there: Mary Ellen B. (b. 1884); Charlotte Ralf E. (b. 1885); & Thomas (b. 1896, d. 1909 in London). - In the 1891 Census, Elizabeth J. Wetherburn (sic), ‘Mother’, aged 35, was living at 45 Sydney Road, Hornsey, Middlesex, with Mary E.B., aged 7, & Charlotte R., aged 5 (all ‘b. Durham South Shields’). - In the 1901 Census, Thomas Weatherburn, a Sea Master Mariner aged 47 (‘b. Scotland’), was living at 23 Eleanor St., South Shields, with Elizabeth, aged 44; Mary E., aged 17; & Thomas, aged 5 (all ‘b. S. Shields’). - Thomas Weatherburn died at Gateshead in the Sept. qtr. of 1909, aged 55. (Deaths’ Index 10a 510 - ) - In the 1911 Census, Elizabeth Weatherburn, a widow aged 54, Married 28 years (3 children, 2 living, 1 dec’d), was living with her daughter ‘Lottie’, a Typist (Insurance), unm. aged 25 (both ‘b. South Shields’), in 3 rooms at 1 Odsey Villas, Umfreville Rd., Harringay, N. London.   


1854

 John Walter Wedderburn [b. 1824, elder s. of John W. ‘of Auchterhouse’ (b. 1798 in Surrey) & Lady Helen Ogilvy (m. 1823)] m. Margaret Ann Whaite [d. of Thomas Whaite (a lieut. in the 94th Regt.) & Sara Elizabeth Paton (d. of Capt. E. Paton of the 42nd Highlanders)] on 27/4 1854 at Castle Eden, co. Durham. - “John, a Capt. in the 42nd Regt. (the Black Watch) served in the West Indies and elsewhere….and after his retirement he was subsequently a major & lieut-col. in the Royal Perthshire Militia. - He and Margaret had 2 sons & a daughter. -   When John left the army they resided at his mother’s house, Rosebank, near Roslin, but after her death (in 1868), he moved to Liberton House, nr. Edinburgh, where he lived until 1878, when he purchased ‘Marfield’, at Blairgowrie, Perthshire”. - John died at ‘Marfield’ on 20/7/1879 and was buried at Auchterhouse. (After John’s death his widow presented a font commemorative of him to the Episcopal Church in Blairgowrie.) - (W.B. p. 349, & footnote³) - In the 1881 Census, Margaret, aged 44 (‘b. Ireland’) was living at Marfield with her only daughter, Helen Margaret (b. 1857), unm. aged 23, & her younger son, Charles David St. Clair W. (b. 1864), a Scholar aged 17 (both ‘b. Rosslyn, Edinburgh’), with Visitor Janetta Jameson, aged 18 (‘b. Kirkcaldy, Fife’), & a Servant. - In the 1891 Census, Margaret, ‘aged 54’, was living at Rattray, Perth, and Helen M. Ogilvy Wedderburn, ‘aged 31’, was living in Gorbals, Glasgow. - John’s widow Margartet died in 1926. (Burke’s Peerage & Baronetage – Ogilvy-Wedderburn)


1855

 John Walter Maurice Wedderburn, elder s. of John Walter W. [b. 1824 in Surrey, e.s. of John W. ‘of Auchterhouse’ & Lady Helen Ogilvy (m. 1823)] & Margaret Anne Whaite [m. 1854], was b. 17/3/1855 & bap. 27/4/1855 at Trinity Church, Stirling.   - “John was ordained into the Scottish Episcopal Church in March 1886 and was sometime chaplain to the Bishop of Argyll and the Isles”. - In the 1891 Census, John, aged 36, was living at Portree, Isle of Skye.  “In 1898, he was unm., & in charge of St. Peter’s, Stornoway, in the Isle of Lewis”. Charlotte Louisa Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, 2nd d. of Frederick Scrymgeour-W. [b. 1808] & his [2nd (?or3rd)] wife, Selina Mary Garth [m. 1852] was b. 7/5/1855 at Portobello, Edinburgh. - In the 1881 Census, Charlotte, unm. aged 25, was living at Sandleford Lodge, Sandleford, Berks., with her widowed mother & unm. younger sister Selina. - “In 1897 she was living at Haines Hill, Berks.”. (W.B. p. 183) - In the 1901 Census, C.L. Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, unm. aged 45 (‘b. Scotland’), was ‘living on her own means’ with her uncle Thomas Garth, Landed Proprietor, unm. aged 80 (‘b. London’); her mother,  Selina M. S. Wedderburn, also ‘living on own means’, a widow aged 76 (‘b. Hurst, Berks.’), at Haines Hill House, St. Nicholas, Hurst, Berks. - In the 1911 Census, Charlotte Louisa Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, Gentlewoman, unm. aged 55 (‘b. Portobello, Edinburgh’), was living in 7 Rooms at Kingstreet Farm, Wokingham, Berks., with Visitor Sarah Jane Hobson, unm. aged 55 (‘b. Yorks.’), & 3 Servants. - Charlotte was buried at St. Nicholas, Hurst, on 22/8/1938, aged 83.  


1855

 Thomas Wedderburn [unidentified] died in the General Prison at Perth on 30/5/1855, aged 19. - “His mother’s name is given as Elizabeth”. (Edin. Reg. House) - (Misc. Refs., Scottish Records - W.B. p. 498 & Death entry.)  


1855

 Catherine Cowborough Wedderburn [b. 1827, bap. 1828, 2nd d. of Robert W., Tenant Farmer at Camno (b. 1778) & Barbara Hay (m. 1828)] m. James Louden [brother of her sister Margaret Wilson W’s husband - m. 1864] on 27/11/1855 at Meigle.  Catherine & James Lowden (sic) had one s., John Wedderburn Lowden, who m. Mary Ann Smith in 1881. - In 1891 Catherine was living at Perth. (W.B. p. 225)  


1856

 John Wedderburn [b. 1825, e.s. of (Sir) John W. (b. 1779), 2nd Bt. of Balindean in 1858, & Henrietta Milburn (m. 1822 at Bombay)] m. Alice Bell [d. of the late Dandisson Coates Bell, of the Bombay Medical Board] on 29/1/1856 at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Edinburgh.  - They had a son, John James (b. 15/11/1856 at Edinburgh). - “Both parents and child were killed in the Indian Mutiny, 29/5/1957, and were buried at Hissar with the other victims”.  (W.B. p. 299) - [In a “List of Inscriptions of Christian Tombs or Monuments in the Punjab……possessing Historical, or Archealogical Interest …”, compiled by Miles Irving, I.C.S., late Exhibitioner of Balliol, at Lahore, Punjab, in 1910, it shows an inscription on a Monument to the Victims of the 1857 Mutiny near the Church at Hissar: 1) “Sacred to the memory of The Europeans Murdered at Hissar and Hansee. John Wedderburn Esquire Collector and Magistrate Mrs. Alice Wedderburn, and infant son……”.  On graves in the Churchyard, Hissar, is recorded: 29th May 1857. John Wedderburn, Alice Wedderburn. John James Wedderburn. In memory of John Wedderburn of the Bengal Civil Service aged 32 years Alice his wife aged 23 years and John James their infant son aged 6 months who fell victims near this spot to the mutiny at Hissar on the 29th May 1857: “Them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.” 1st Thess IV Chap 14 Verse.]


1856

 James Wedderburn-Ogilvy [b. 1820, 5th s. of Peter W-Ogilvy ‘of Ruthven’ (b. 1781) & Anna Ogilvy (m. 1811)] m. Catherine Lilian Harriet Ramsay [only child of William Ramsay of Rannagulzion, Alyth, Perth, Professor of Humanity in the University of Glasgow - & brother of Sir George Ramsay, 9th Bt. of Banff, & Catherine Davidson] on 24/1/1856 at Glasgow. - They had no issue. - James died on 28/1/1893 in Rome. John Wedderburn [b. 1821, 6th & ygst. s. of Thomas W. ‘of Berwick & Edinburgh’ (b. c1787, q.v.) & Jane Cockburn (m. c1806 at Lamberton Toll)] m. ii) Margaret Kirkwood [d. of Alexander Kirkwood] on 15/4/1856 at Glasgow High Church. - [John, a Joiner, had m. i) Ann Libsit on 23/7/1849 (q.v.). - They had 2 children, Elizabeth (b. 1849) & Thomas (b. 1850), but Ann died between 1851 & 1856.] - In the 1861 Census, John Wedderburn, a Plane Maker aged 38 (‘b. Berwick on Tweed’), was living at Bread St., Cullen, Glasgow, with Margaret, aged 40 (‘b. Glasgow’), Elizabeth, aged 11 (‘b. Glasgow’); Thomas, aged 10 (‘b. England’); & Margaret’s father, Alexander Kirkwood, Weaver, a widower aged 77 (‘b. Glasgow’). - “John died in 1879”.  (W.B. p. 496) - [He is probably the John Wedderburn, railway employee, who died at South Shields, Durham, in June 1879, ‘aged 54’. - ] - In the 1881 Census, Margaret Wedderburn, Housemaid, a widow aged 62 (‘b. Glasgow’), was an inmate in the Barnhill Poorhouse, Barnhill, nr. Glasgow. - Margaret died at Dennistoun, Glasgow, on 17/12/1892, aged 78. (W.B. p. 496)   


1856

 Sir (Peter) Arthur Halkett ‘of Pitfirrane’, 8th & last Bt. of Gosford [b. 1834, e.s. of Sir John Halkett, 7th Bt. of Gosford (b. 1805) & Amelia Hood Conway (m. 1831)] m. his cousin Eliza Anna Hill [e.d. of Capt. Richard Kirwan Hill & Jane Margaret Halkett (e.d. of Sir Peter Halkett, 6th Bt. of Gosford, & Elizabeth Todd, m. 1802)] on 6/5/1856 at Elstree Church, Herts. - They had a son & 5 daughters. - The son, Wedderburn Conway Halkett was b. at Shenley Lodge, Herts., on 1/2/1857. [See below.] - The 5 daughters, none of whom married, were b. at Dunfermline, Fife. - “In 1896, Sir Arthur was lieut-col. commanding the Fife Artillery Militia and captain of the Fife Mounted Rifle Volunteers. He was also commander of the Royal order of Isabella la Catolica of Spain”.  (W.B. p. 390) - He died at Pitfirrane, Fife, on 8/3/1904, aged 69, and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey.  His only son & his only grandson having predeceased him, the baronetcy of Gosford became extinct. (Burke’s Peerage & Baronetage) - Sir Arthur’s widow Eliza died on 3/1/1931, aged 93. - She was buried with her husband in Dunfermline Abbey. (‘Halkett-Wedderburn Ancestral Bloodline’, p. 41)


1856

Selina Elgiva Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, 3rd d. of Frederick Lewis S-W [b. 1808] & his 2nd [?or3rd] wife, Selina Mary Garth [m. 1852], bap. 22/8/1856 at Balmerino.   In the 1881 Census, Selina, unm. aged 24 (‘b. Portobello’), was living at Sandleford Lodge, Berks., with her widowed mother & unm. elder sister Charlotte. - Selina m. Capt. James Carnegie Gillespie, R.H.A. (3rd s. of David Gillespie of Mountquhanie, Cupar, Fife - a grandson of Janet Scrymgeour, b. c1747, & John Gillespie, m. 1776, q.v.), at Sandleford, Newbury, Berks., on 21/6/1883. - In 1897 Selina & her husband, by then Colonel of the R.H.A., were living at Weedon, Northamptonshire. (W.B. p. 183)  


1856

John James Wedderburn, only s. of John W. [b. 1825] & Alice Bell [m. 1856], bap. 15/11/1856 at Dean & Morningside parish, Edinburgh.  (OPR) - “John James & his parents were killed in the Indian Mutiny, 29/5/1957, and were buried at Hissar with the other victims”.  (W.B. p. 299)


1857

 Wedderburn Conway Halkett, only s. of Sir (Peter) Arthur Halkett ‘of Pitfirrane’ [8th (& last) Bt. of Gosford, b. 1834] & Eliza Anna Hill [m. 1856, at Elstree, Herts.] was b. 1/2/1857 at Shenley Lodge, Herts. [David Wedderburn-Webster, b. 1757, senior partner of “Wedderburn, Webster & Co.” in Leadenhall St. London, at the time of his death in 1801, had lived at Shenley Hill, Herts.] -  “Wedderburn Conway was educated at Eton and entered the army in 1879. He was lieutenant and captain in the 79th Highlanders, and also in the Fife Artillery Militia”. -  He m. Jessie Elizabeth Lemprière in 1881 (q.v.). - (Their only child, Arthur Wedderburn Halkett, b. 1882 at Gibraltar, died at Camberley, Hants., on 13/10/1886, aged 4.) - Wedderburn Conway Halkett died ‘of an illness contracted upon the Nile expedition’ on 23/8/1885, at Woolstone, Hants.  (W.B. p. 390) - [When his father, Sir Arthur Halkett, died in 1904, the Baronetcy of Gosford therefore became extinct.]


1857

 Francis Edward Keir Wedderburn [twin with Mary, below], 3rd s. Andrew W. [b. 1821, Wedderburn-Maxwell from 1879] & Joanna Keir [m. 1847], was b. 11/3/1857, on board the s.s. “Columba” off Malta, on its voyage home from India, & bap. at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, London. - “Francis was educated at Clifton College & Balliol College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1878 but, passing into the Civil Service of India, did not proceed a degree. He went to India in 1880, and entered the Madras Civil Service; and was acting assistant-resident at Mysore, and (1891) special assistant to the Collector of Gangam. - He died unm. on 2/2/1893 at Calingapatam, Madras. (W.B. p. 316)  


1857

 Mary Wedderburn [twin with Francis Edward Keir, above], younger d. of Andrew W. [b. 1821, Wedderburn-Maxwell from 1879] & Joanna Keir [m. 1847], was b. 11/3/1857, on board the s.s. “Columba” off Malta, on its voyage home from India, & bap. at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, London. - In the 1891 Census, Mary Wedderburn, aged 34 (‘b. at Sea’), was a Visitor staying at 42 Beaufort Gardens, Kensington, Middlx. - Mary m. Charles Cannan (s. of David Cannan, & a fellow of Trinity College, Oxford) at Corsock Parish Church, Kirkcudbrightshire, on 18/12/1891 (q.v.). - [They had 4 daughters.] - (W.B. p. 317)  


1857

 Helen Margaret Ogilvy Wedderburn, only d. of John Walter W. [b. 1824 in Surrey] & Margaret Anne Whaite [m. 1854 at Castle Eden, Durham], bap. 12/12/1857 at Lasswade.  (On W.B. p. 350 it says that Helen was b. 12/12/1857 & bap. at St. John’s Church, Prince’s St., Edinburgh.) - In the 1881 Census, Helen, unm., aged 23 (‘b. Rosslyn’), was living with her widowed mother Margaret, an Annuitant aged 44 (‘b. Ireland’), and her younger brother Charles (b. 1864), at Marfield, Rattray, Perthshire. - In the 1891 Census, Helen M. O. Wedderburn, ‘aged 31’, was living in Gorbals, Glasgow.  “In 1898, Helen, still unm., was living at Marfield, ‘Blairgowrie’, Perth, with her mother Margaret”.  (W.B. p. 350) - Helen Margaret Ogilvie Wedderburn died unmarried in 1932. (W.B. p. 225) - Jane Wilson Smart, wife of James Smart, Inspector for the poor and Registrar, died at St. Ann’s, Meethill, Alyth, on 10/5/1897, aged 64.

 [John Andrew & Jessie had 7 sons & 4 daughters.]  “In 1898, John was living at Woodside, Bath, Somerset”.  (W.B. p. 312) - [On the death of his elder brother Thomas (b. 1814) without issue, in 1899, John Andrew became the heir presumptive to the Balindean baronetcy but he died on 17/9/1906, during the lifetime of the 4th Bt., and it was his 3rd (but, by then, only surviving son), John Andrew W-Ogilvy (b. 1866), who, on the death of his kinsman, Sir William Wedderburn (b. 1838), 4th Bt. of Balindean, in 1918, succeeded him as 5th Bt. of Balindean. - On assuming the title he reversed his surnames and became ‘Ogilvy-Wedderburn’.  John Andrew Wedderburn-Ogilvy [5th Bt. of Balindean in 1918], 3rd s. of John Andrew W-Ogilvy [b. 1818] & Jessie Stewart Gray [m. 1860], was b. 16/9/1866 at Alyth, Perthshire. - “In 1898 John was living on a ranch in Santa Fé.”  (W.B. p. 312) - On his father’s death, in 1906, John Andrew became the heir presumptive to the baronetcy of Balindean. - He m. Meta Aileen Odette Grogan (elder d. of Brig.-Gen. Edward George Grogan, C.B. C.B.E., J.P.) on 4/10/1909 (q.v.). - [They had a son & 3 daughters.] - On the death of his kinsman Sir William W., 4th Bt. of Balindean, in 1918, John Andrew became the 5th Bt. - On assuming the title he reversed his surnames and became Ogilvy-Wedderburn. - -Lady Ogilvy-Wedderburn died on 23/9/1952 & Sir John O-W died on 10/3/1956.  - His eldest son (John) Peter O-W (b. 1917) succeeded him as 6th Bt. of Balindean. [b. 1842] & Eliza Graham Fyfe Dochard [m. 1865], was b. 27/10/1866 at Bankhead of Pittenchar, Kinglassie, Fife (W.B. p. 497) & bap. 27/10/1866 at Kinglassie.   In the 1881 Census, John, a Scholar aged 14, was living with his parents & sister at 35 South Lauriston Gardens, St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh. - In 1886 John went out to Africa with his father James. - [His mother & sister stayed in Edinburgh.] -In 1891 John was living on a sheep farm in New South Wales.  I do not know if he is responsible for the names Wedderburn, East and North-East, given to certain mining leases of 3,508 and 13,567 acres each, and mentioned as ‘recently taken up’ in the British Australian of 11 June 1896, p. 912”. (M. cert.on which Jessie’s father’s name is wrongly given as John. Wedderburn, as is noted by ‘A.W.’ in Misc. Refs., Scottish Records, W.B. p. 498, where he states that ‘Jessie was present at her mother Agnes’s death’.  - Agnes died in Edinburgh on 20/4/1861.) - Jessie may be the Jessie Wedderburn’ who died at Cavers [2m. NE of Hawick] in 1900, ‘aged 78’.

Jane Brown Baptie [‘d. of John Baptie by Jean Brown’] on 4/7/1867 at Newington, Edinburgh.  (Marr. ref. 685/05 0191) - [Thomas & Jane had a d., Jane Brown Wedderburn, bap. 30/5/1868, who is said to have died aged 14 - but an entry in the OPR shows that she died in 1869, aged 2.] - Jane died at Newington, Edinburgh, on 27/3/1870, aged 30, & Thomas died at 6, Lauriston Gardens, Edinburgh, on 9/8/1886, aged 49, and is buried in the Dean Cemetery there.  (W.B. p. 496)

He is described as 5ft. 6½ins tall with Light hair, Blue eyes & a Fresh complexion. He served on “Pembroke”, “Rodney”, Vivid II”, Bonaventure, Vivid II (again), “Theseus” & “Vivid II”, yet again, before purchasing his discharge on 13/2/1897, thereby cancelling his 12 year engagement. - William Wedderburn, ‘late of Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne’, m. Rev. James Maclagan, D.D., in 1834, q.v.]. - In accordance with the provisions of the entail, Katharine and her surviving children added the Wedderburn name to Maclagan.

Scotland’), was living with his parents & 6 siblings at 136 Headland St., Byker, N-on-Tyne. - In the 1901 Census, Robert, a Brass & Iron Founder, unm., aged 29 (b. Scotland’), was still living with his parents at 136 Headland St., Byker. - “Either Robert or his brother Henry (b. 1876) had a son who was in the R.A.F. during WWII. - Son believed to have lived in London”.

Helen Georgina Elizabeth Wedderburn [b. 1830, only d. of John W. ‘of Auchterhouse’ & Lady Helen Ogilvy (m. 1823)] m. Andrew Webster [of Rutherford Castle, co. Peebles, & later of St. Leonard’s, Sussex] on 4/7/1871 at Dunblane. They had no issue. - [It seems highly likely that Andrew is the Andrew Webster, W.S., who was sole executor of the Will of Sir David Wedderburn (1st Bt. of Balindean) when he died in 1858, and also one of the executors of the Will of Sir David’s half-brother, Sir John, 2nd Bt. of Balindean, on his death in 1862.] - After her husband’s death in 1876 Helen moved from St. Leonard’s to Beaulieu, Hants, but in 1898 she was living in Carnoustie, co. Weatherburn, a Railway Engine Stoker, unm. aged 29 (‘b. Scotland’), was a Boarder in the household of fellow Railway Engine Stoker James Marshall & his wife & family, at 13 Thirlmore St., Botchergate, Cumberland.

Edith Moffat (only d. of John Moffat, C.E., & his wife Jessie Fulton) on 30/7/1901 (q.v.). - [They had 2 sons & 2 daughters.] - When his father died in 1914, Henry succeeded to the estates of Wedderburn & Birkhill and was de jure 10th Earl of Dundee. - Henry Scrymgeour-fWedderburn died at Birkhill, Balmerino, o12/5/1924, aged 51. - His widow Edith S-W died on 16/10/1968, aged 91.

[b. 1840, ‘of Pearsie’ from 1891] & Anne Ogilvie [m. 1865], was b. 3/8/1875 at Forfar.  (W.B. p. 328) - (‘George McLagan Wedderburn, s. of Alexander Wedderburn & Annie (sic) Ogilvie, was bap. in Apr. 1876 at Angus’. - ) - In the 1881 Census, George, aged 5, was living with his parents & 5 siblings at 71 East High Street, Forfar. - He was still living there when his father succeeded to the Pearsie estate in April 1891. George m. Dora Stuart in 1903. - On his father’s death, in 1907, George succeeded to ‘Pearsie’ but he emigrated to Western Australia and the entail of the estate was broken. George spent 11 years in WA before moving to Queensland, where he married Dora Stewart. - George died ‘s.p.’ on 28/12/1972 at the District Meorial Hospital, Atherton, Queensland, leaving a Will.  [In March 1950, the Pearsie estate was sold to Earl Granville (whose wife was a sister of the Queen Mother) and in July 1977 the estate was again sold. The buyer this time was the Earl of Inchcape (family name MacKay). In 1986, the Earl sold it to ‘a Continental buyer’. (“The Field”, 18 Oct. 1986)]

[b. 1840, ‘of Pearsie’ from 1891] & Anne Ogilvie [m. 1865], was b. 26/2/1882 at Forfar.  (W.B. p. 328) - In the 1891 Census, Joseph, aged 9, was living with his parents & 8 siblings in Forfar but, in April of that year, his father succeeded to the estate of Pearsie.] “Joseph graduated in mathematics at Edinburgh in 1903….. In 1909 he went to Princetown but returned to fight in the British Army in WW 1. - After the war, Joseph settled at Princetown until his retirement in 1945. His work on algebra includes two fundamental theorems known by his name, one on the classification of semisimple algebras, and the other on finite division rings.” (Chambers Biographical Dictionary)] - Joseph Henry Maclagan-Wedderburn died in Princeton, Jersey, USA, on 9/10/1948, aged 66.

Scottish Records - W.B. p. 497) - [In a note under ‘Wedderburn Wills’, on W.B. Vol. II, p. 521, ‘A.W.’ says: “Weatherburn would seem to be an error for Wedderburn and the entry is therefore placed here and not in Note I”. (‘Note I’ gives details of a few Weatherburn Wills.) - Probate of Thomas’s Will was granted on 6/9/1882, with Scottish confirmation granted to Alexander Mather junior, the executor, and John Scot, a deponent. - Thomas’s estate of £120 was left to his wife, Sarah Chisholm ‘or Weatherburn’.] - Thomas Weatherburn had m. Sarah Chisholm in 1855 at Glendale, Northumberland.  Their elder dau., Eva Lavinia [bap. 1857 at Alnwick] m. Alexander Mather in Edinburgh in 1877 & their younger dau. Minnie Jane (bap. 1860 at Ancroft) m. John Scott there in 1880. [Minnie Jane Scott died at Newington, Edinburgh, on 18/8/1900, aged 42.] - In the 1881 Census, Thomas Weatherburn, a Brewer’s Traveller aged 53 (‘b. Goldie, Granton) in 1911.  [They had 3 sons & a daughter.] - “Ernest Maclagan-W., O.B.E., D.L., D.Sc., L.L.B., L.L.D. (Edin.), W.S., was Professor of Conveyancing in the University of Edinburgh, 1922-35, Deputy Keeper of H.M. Signet, 1935-54, Chairman of General Council of Solicitors in Scotland etc. etc. - He was knighted in 1942. Ann Madeline Cunliffe in 1922. - [They had 2 sons & 2 daughters.]  John Wedderburn-Maxwell died in Surrey in January 1990. (Burke’s Peerage & Baronetage – Ogilvy-Wedderburn) - He wrote two autobiographical booklets, “Young Contemptible”, about his experiences as an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery during WWI, and “Average for his Rank”, about his home and army life between WW1 & WW2, in which there is a photograph of Glenlair, which sadly burned down in 1929, and of his wife’s home, Headley Court in Surrey. He mentions his cousin Kier Wedderburn, who in 1929 was adjutant at the depot of the Black Watch at Perth, and writes that ‘both their fathers had been at Glenalmond and the name of Wedderburn is still respected, if no longer notorious, throughout the country’!

(He had an only son, Henry Weatherburn, who was admitted a Freeman of B-on-T, as ‘Physicist’, on 30/9/1969, then living in Glasgow.)

Wedderburn, 2nd Lieut, R.A., m. i) Margaret Marshall Scott [dau. of Robert Scott, M.D.) at St. Columba’s Church, Pont Street, London, on 25/5/1940. ). - They had 2 sons: Robert (d.s.p.) & Alexander (afterwards the Rev. Dr. Alexander M-W.) - Thomas m. ii) in 1965, Margaret Neil. [They had no children.] - Thomas MacLagan-Wedderburn died in 1968.

 John Peter Wedderburn-Ogilvy [6th Bt. of Balindean in 1956], only s. of of John Andrew W-Ogilvy [b. 1866 - 5th Bt. of Balindean in 1918]  & Meta Aileen Odette Grogan [m.1909], was b. on 29/9/1917. - On the death of Sir William Wedderburn, 4th Bt. of Balindean, in 1918, John’s father became the 5th Bt. of Balindean and reversed his surnames. - Commander (John) Peter Ogilvy-Wedderburn, RN, m. Elizabeth Katharine Cox in 1946. - [They had 3 daughters and a son, Andrew John Alexander Ogilvy-Wedderburn (b. 4/8/1952). (b. 1947). - WilliamAlexander m. ii) in 1951, Margaret Emily Innes [d. of William Henry Innes, of Largo, Fife], by whom he had another son & 2 daughters. - Margaret died in 1988 & William Alexander Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, D.F.C., died at ‘Myrtle Cottage’, Orton by Fochabers, on 7 May 1995.

(Iron Moulder, b. 1839 at Berwick on Yweed) & Jane Richardson Steel (m. 1866)] m. ii) Hugh Nisbet, widower & Miner, aged 48, on 16/5/1919 at the Congregational Church Manse, Dreghorn, Ayr. - Janet died on 8/12/1938, aged 65yrs, at the Infirmary, Kilmarnock, of Chronic Nephritis & Pneumonia. Her brother, John C. Weatherburn of 13 Hatters Lane, Berwick registered her death there on 10/12/1938 and gave her usual address as 91 Dundonald Road, Kilmarnock, stating also that she was a Houekeeper in Domestic Service.
